I’ve been thinking about something a youth intern at Global Nomads named Nkeshimana, from Mozambique, said recently: “As I embraced my own imperfection, I became more attuned to the needs of others… I recognized that, like me, others also needed space: space to process, space to speak at their own pace, space to participate in ways that worked for them.” It caused me to pause and reflect. Because he’s right. Empathy doesn’t start with accepting others. It starts with accepting ourselves. When we can hold our own imperfections with compassion, we naturally start to engage others with more patience and care. At Global Nomads, I witness youth practicing compassion with themselves and others every day. So many tell us they cannot do this in schools that often weren’t designed with them in mind. But at Global Nomads, where they have the space to reflect, to accept themselves as they are, and to connect with people so very different from themselves, something changes. They show up differently. They listen differently. They contribute differently. They build bridges that many adults still struggle to cross. That’s the ripple effect of being a youth-driven organization whose design communicates, “you’re OK as you are.” And at Global Nomads we enjoy that effect every day, in empathy that starts first within, then expands across borders. #YouthVoice #Empathy #Leadership #Belonging #GlobalNomads #Compassion Charter for Compassion

Changing learning starts with new assumptions. At the International Youth Foundation's UP for Change Partner Learning Event, Global Nomads reflected on three practical paradigms that guide system redesign: Agency, Belonging, and Competence. They are the ABCs that shape more inclusive, youth-centered learning. Thanks to these paradigms, we will not not just supporting individual growth. We will be seeding the transformative potential that can reshape systems and expand what’s possible for all learners.
