About us
GrowNYC is a hands-on non-profit with a mission to empower all New Yorkers with equitable access to fresh, locally grown food and neighborhood green spaces, reduce waste, and care for the environment. GrowNYC was originally created in 1970 as the Council on the Environment of New York City (CENYC). Born out of the spirit of the first Earth Day, CENYC was initially a policy-based organization, writing comprehensive reports about quality of life issues like air quality, traffic, and noise. Today, we serve over 3 million New Yorkers annually through a robust network of sustainability programs and resources. Our programs focus our efforts on four key areas: Food Access & Agriculture, Green Spaces, Zero Waste and Education. Since 1970, GrowNYC has been rolling up its sleeves alongside NYC residents to: - Provide access to healthy, fresh, local food for all New Yorkers -Grow and maintain vibrant green spaces and community gardens. -Help New Yorkers recycle more and reduce waste. -Create the next generation of environmental leaders through hands-on education programs.

In his recent op-ed for the New York Daily News, GrowNYC President & CEO, Marcel Van Ooyen, speaks on GrowNYC's commitment to tackling food insecurity by championing New York's regional farmers. GrowNYC is founded on the principle that a resilient food system, built on local agriculture, is essential for the health and well-being of our city's residents. Through our work, we are dedicated to creating a more equitable New York where all communities have reliable access to fresh, nutritious food. We believe that by strengthening the link between local farms and urban communities, we can address the systemic issues that contribute to food insecurity. On August 15, GrowNYC joined New York elected officials and advocates to raise awareness about looming federal funding cuts to food assistance programs, and to urge families to take advantage of the final days to enroll in the Summer EBT program, which provides critical grocery benefits to help children access healthy food during the summer months. The press conference also called attention to the end of the USDA-funded New York Food for New York Families program, which has provided thousands of New Yorkers with free, locally grown produce while supporting our state’s farmers. In partnership with Henry Street Settlement, the event concluded with a distribution of fresh fruits and vegetables for the community. We are deeply grateful to New York State Senator Brian Kavanagh, Council Member Christopher Marte, David Garza, President & CEO of Henry Street Settlement and Rachel Sabella, Director of No Kid Hungry New York, for standing with us to highlight the urgent need for continued investment in local food access. If you believe in the fundamental right to healthy food, please consider making a gift to GrowNYC’s Emergency Fund. Your support helps keep vital food access points alive for New Yorkers who need them most. 💚 Visit https://lnkd.in/eHAyTeM5 to donate.
