About us

Since 1946, Gruen Associates succeeds as one of Los Angeles’ best known legacy firms with a deep portfolio of landmark projects. Building on the trailblazing success of legendary Founder Victor Gruen, we continue to provide creative solutions through superior planning, architecture, retail architecture, transportation planning and design, urban design, interior design, and landscape architecture services. Our impact on the profession and the world continues into the future under the leadership of Managing Partner Michael A. Enomoto, FAIA and his Partners—Larry Schlossberg, AIA, AICP, LEED AP BD+C; Debra Gerod, FAIA, LEED AP; and Ashok Vanmali, AIA. At the heart of Gruen Associates’ leadership group are the “Associates.” Developed over many years, the Associates Group contributes to the strength and capability of the firm. Our success, without question, is also due in part to the dedication of our talented 75-person staff. Quite unique is the level of diversity that has organically been the character and DNA of the firm. Throughout our history, the leaders and staff have worked together with a shared commitment and holistic purpose for our industry, clients and projects. Innovators for significant, complex and challenging projects, Gruen Associates has won numerous awards including the 2015 AIA California Firm Award and the 2019 APA Los Angeles Segment Distinguished Leadership - Planning Firm Award for our collaborative practice, a portfolio of over 10,000 projects, and contribution and pivotal role in mentoring future generations of professionals. We continue to provide research, innovative design and project management through personal attention, while taking advantage of the wide range of expertise and technical capability of a large organization for the highest quality service for our clients. Through technical excellence, we create multi-purpose, engaging spaces and buildings for community interaction, and social and economic growth.

Updates

  • Gruen Associates' Senior Associate --Maya White-Turre, AIA --was asked to chair the AIA California (AIA|CA) Embodied Carbon Working Group. The Group forms a critical component of the state organization's climate action activities directing and formulating Zero Net Carbon Design (ZNCD) education opportunities and the AIA's state code advocacy agenda.    The group made several presentations to the California Carbon Reduction Collaborative (CCRC), which consists of members from the California Building & Standards Commission (CBSC), the Department of the State Architect (DSA), and the California Department of Housing & Community Development (HCD). These groups determine updates to CALGreen, the California Building Code (CBC), and the California Residential Code. The Embodied Carbon Working Group was asked to collaborate with the CCRC to refine code, which regulates the embodied carbon of larger buildings and paves the way for reuse of building materials, deconstruction rather than demolition of buildings, and a circular building material economy.    To date, AIA|CA's Embodied Carbon Working Group spearheaded Calgreen's adoption of its first-ever embodied carbon regulations. This year, the Group advocated for expansion of the regulations to cover residential projects over 100,000 SF and moving the threshold of Global Warming Potential (GWP) material thresholds to match California Buy Clean Standards. Maya introduced code language defining salvaged materials and integrating the option to utilize them as having an equivalent GWP of zero. This will likely be included in the 2025 Intervening Supplement to the CBC.   As part of her responsibilities as Chair, Maya is an organizer of and facilitator for Circular SoCal --a symposium on building material reuse, co-sponsored by the AIA|LA and the City of Santa Monica. AIA|CA's ZNCD courses, organized by Maya, include Salvaged Lumber Reuse in Federal Center South, MEP Embodied Carbon 101 for Architects (this September 24th), Biobased Materials & Biogenic Carbon, and Embodied Carbon Software Tools.    Related Links:   https://lnkd.in/gTcWkdfu   https://lnkd.in/drM5e94a   https://lnkd.in/gX3gr-YP   https://lnkd.in/greNJqKu

The moment has arrived—Metro's world-class LAX/Metro Transit Center Station opened to passengers, travelers, and commuters this past Friday with shared enthusiasm felt by all for the much-needed, transformative connection to our regional transit system to LAX! Gruen Associates, as the Executive Architect and Landscape Architect, with design firm Grimshaw Architects, multi-disciplinary engineering firm Arup, and our whole design team are excited to see this decade-long project realized. This is a monumental accomplishment for our team and for the city of Los Angeles and the local community! Trains are running from our station as are our imaginations for how far we have come and how far we will go as we await completion of LAWA's Airport People Mover system next year!
