About us
The Hannibal Regional Healthcare System (HRHS) story began when community benefactors and leaders formed Hannibal’s first hospitals - Levering Hospital in 1903 and St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in 1914. The merger of these two organizations in the late 1980s led to another major milestone in the evolution of strong community-based healthcare. In 1993 the new Hannibal Regional Hospital opened its doors on a pastoral 105-acre setting which is now a thriving healthcare campus. The beautifully appointed medical campus currently includes Hannibal Regional Hospital, Hannibal Regional Medical Group, Hannibal Regional Foundation, and the James E. Cary Cancer Center. The Hannibal Regional Healthcare System team is nearly 1,000 strong and is mission-driven, values-based and committed to preserving the vision and legacy of our founders. Our team takes pride in continuing to create and strengthen access to community-based, contemporary healthcare resources for patients, families, and the communities we serve.

🌟 Leanne’s Life-Changing Journey 🌟 For years, Leanne struggled with her weight. At 5’2” and 270 pounds, even simple movements became painful. Walking across a room left her exhausted, and her health was spiraling with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and uncontrolled diabetes. She felt isolated, depressed, and fearful of going out in public. But Leanne knew something had to change. After moving closer to her son in Kirksville, she started with small steps—literally—committing to daily walks and new routines. When she established care with Dr. Justin Puckett, he recognized her determination and connected her with Dr. Mujeeb Siddiqui and the team at Hannibal Regional Weight Management Solutions. Leanne was approved for laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy after a thorough preparation process that included nutrition counseling, medical clearances, and lifestyle changes. What truly made the difference was the seamless collaboration of her care team—Dr. Puckett, Dr. Siddiqui, therapist Morgan Gaeke, and the bariatric staff—who supported her every step of the way. “The fact that my primary care doctor, surgeon, and therapist all worked together meant so much to me,” Leanne shares. “It’s a well-rounded approach that really works.” Her surgery went smoothly, and recovery was quicker than she expected. With encouragement from her care team and the support group at Hannibal Regional, Leanne stayed motivated and inspired by connecting with others on the same journey. Two years later, her results are nothing short of incredible: Leanne has lost nearly 170 pounds. Her blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes are now under control. She’s active, energized, and enjoying a social life she once thought was impossible. “My life is completely different now,” Leanne says. “I love being social, I love mentoring others who are struggling, and I honestly feel like a teenager again.” ✨ If you’re ready to take the first step toward better health, reach out to the compassionate team at Hannibal Regional Weight Management Solutions at (573) 248-5407 or visit https://lnkd.in/eiitnBaw

Dr. Gonzalez-Trapaga earned his medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine – Baystate Medical Center. He then pursued a fellowship in General Nephrology at the UC San Diego School of Medicine, followed by a fellowship in Interventional Nephrology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Dr. Gonzalez-Trapaga chose to specialize in nephrology because of the opportunity to build lasting relationships with patients and their families while helping them navigate the challenges of kidney-related conditions. “Patients with kidney issues are often concerned with the uncertainty that a diagnosis can bring,” shares Dr. Gonzalez-Trapaga. “I see myself as a provider of hope and empowerment. By helping patients understand their condition, explore treatment alternatives, and learn ways to improve and protect their kidney health, I can guide them toward a greater sense of control over their lives and well-being.” Dr. Gonzalez-Trapaga is passionate about listening to his patients, providing guidance, and building trust through understanding, empathy, and competence. “The most rewarding part of my work is being able to positively impact lives,” he explains. “I strive to give back the empathy, compassion, and hope that I have been given, and to be a source of light in moments of uncertainty.” When asked why he chose Hannibal Regional, Dr. Gonzalez-Trapaga shared, “Hannibal Regional is a well-known healthcare system providing excellent care to communities and focused on quality—it was an easy choice.” Dr. Gonzalez-Trapaga is welcoming patients at Hannibal Regional Medical Group. Hannibal Regional is proud to welcome Branislav Behan, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon, to our growing team of specialists dedicated to providing advanced, patient-centered care. With more than 25 years of experience, Dr. Behan is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and offers expertise in sports medicine, joint replacement (hip, knee, and shoulder), and complex trauma. He completed his medical degree at Memorial University of Newfoundland in Canada, followed by a residency in orthopedic surgery through the combined Memorial/Dalhousie University Program in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Dr. Behan’s path to medicine began early, inspired by a childhood fascination with how the body heals and moves. His calling became clear when he witnessed the suffering of his aunt in Slovakia, who lived with untreated arthritis. That experience, combined with his early curiosity, fueled his dedication to helping patients regain independence through advanced orthopedic care. When deciding where to continue his career, Dr. Behan was drawn to Hannibal Regional’s focus on quality, collaboration, and innovation. “What stood out to me about Hannibal Regional was the level of excellence I saw here — a standard I did not find elsewhere, even in larger medical centers,” he shares. “This is the ideal environment to provide advanced orthopedic care while maintaining a personal connection with patients.” For Dr. Behan, the most rewarding part of his work is seeing patients return to the activities that matter most to them — whether that’s walking without pain, returning to work, or enjoying time with family. His approach to care emphasizes listening, education, and personalized treatment plans, ensuring that every patient receives solutions tailored to their unique needs. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Behan to Hannibal Regional! To schedule an appointment, call 573-629-3500.

Hannibal Regional Medical Group is pleased to welcome Rebekah Blank, PA-C, to its Orthopedic team. With a deep passion for helping patients regain mobility and improve their quality of life, Rebekah brings a wealth of knowledge, compassion, and experience to the region. Rebekah’s interest in medicine began early in life and deepened during her undergraduate studies at Illinois College. While earning her degree, she became a certified EMT-B and gained hands-on experience working in the emergency department at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, Illinois. It was there that she was first introduced to orthopedics, assisting with procedures such as fracture reductions and splinting—an experience that solidified her passion for the field. “I knew I loved orthopedics after working in the ER and being part of helping patients recover from injuries,” says Rebekah. “I went on to complete two orthopedic rotations during PA school at Harding University in Arkansas, and it became clear that this was the specialty I loved most. I enjoy seeing the difference an orthopedic surgery or procedure can make in a person’s life—many patients are able to return to the activities they love.” Rebekah and her husband were looking to move closer to family and find a community-focused healthcare organization. “Growing up in Mendon, Illinois, I had always heard great things about Hannibal Regional,” Rebekah shares. “When we visited, everyone was so welcoming. It was clear that the hospital truly values both its patients and team members and that really stood out to us.” Rebekah is excited to join the dedicated team at Hannibal Regional and to begin serving the community. “I’m so thankful for the opportunity to work alongside such talented professionals and look forward to becoming a part of this incredible community.” As a provider, Rebekah prioritizes listening carefully to each patient’s goals and concerns. “My mission is to improve my patients’ quality of life—whether that’s through diagnosis, education, or operative and non-operative care. I believe in working together to create a treatment plan that best suits their needs.” The most rewarding part of her work, she says, is seeing patients who have been living with chronic pain find relief and renewed mobility. “That’s what orthopedics is all about—helping people get back on their feet and enjoy life again.” To schedule an appointment with Rebekah Blank, PA-C, call Hannibal Regional Medical Group at (573) 629-3500.

“I never imagined I’d be the one having a heart attack,” says Ronald Young of Monroe City, a farmer who loves working on his land and spending time with his family. One evening, Ronald woke with sudden, severe pain shooting through his right arm. The pain was so intense that he went straight to the emergency department at Hannibal Regional, where doctors quickly discovered he was having a heart attack. Doctors first tried placing a stent, but it wasn’t enough to fix Ronald’s condition. He was then told that open heart surgery would be necessary to save his life. “They told me that if I didn’t have the surgery, I could face an even bigger heart attack, and I might not survive the next one.” Ronald recalls. Ronald decided to move forward with open heart surgery at Hannibal Regional with Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Dr. Jose Torres. The surgery was quickly scheduled and went exceptionally well. “The surgery went great and the care I received after was excellent. I had many doctors checking in on me constantly, and Dr. Torres explained everything so well. He continued to check in on me and care for me after the surgery.” Ronald shares. As Ronald recovered, he worked with Hannibal Regional’s cardiac rehab team to gain his strength back. He has since graduated from cardiac rehab and now continues regular cardiology appointments with Hannibal Regional Cardiologist, Dr. Santhosh Mannem to ensure everything is working properly. “I cannot complain, I had a great experience with everyone at Hannibal Regional. Cardiac rehab is what really got me back on my feet. I was very weak after the surgery, and they helped me get back to my life. I’m able to work out on the farm again and I know when I need to take a break, but it’s because of the team at Hannibal Regional that I’m alive and doing well. My advice is to trust the Hannibal Regional doctors and nurses, they will take great care of you!” Thanks to the expert team at Hannibal Regional, Ronald is back to doing what he loves. The comprehensive Heart Center at Hannibal Regional offers a full range of diagnostic, interventional, surgical, and rehabilitative services, all designed to help you live a heart-healthy life, right here at home.
