Congratulations to the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and the Nigerian Ministry of Defence Health Implementation Programme (NMOD-HIP) on 20 years of groundbreaking military-to-military health partnership! Over the years, this collaboration has worked to provide HIV prevention, care, and treatment services to military and civilian communities in the region and conduct research to counter HIV, malaria, Lassa fever, and more. Since 2005, HJFMRI has supported this partnership and helped strengthen military and civilian health systems through the development of clinical, laboratory, and logistical capabilities aimed at long-term sustainability. We're proud to be part of their mission to advance military medicine and global health!

Solutions to public health challenges don't always require the most cutting edge technologies; sometimes agility and community connection are the keys to advancement. In Tanzania's remote Rukwa region, poor roads and limited transport options made it difficult for clinics to get timely lab results for their clients. Now, through a program led by the U.S. Military HIV Research Program with support from HJFMRI , bodaboda (motorcycle) drivers transport blood samples from distant health facilities to central labs. This "spoke-to-hub" model has helped: ✅ Cut lab result turnaround times from 30+ days to just two weeks ✅ Move up to 135 samples daily ✅ Deliver medicines and supplies to rural health facilities In Tanzania, 🏍️ drivers like Simon Kazule "are frontline health workers," said Dr. Fatma Urassa, Medical Officer In-Charge at Muze Health Centre. The future of health and biomedical research is collaborative. Breakthroughs happen when scientists, institutions and innovators come together across disciplines and geographies. In this brief clip, Dr. Daniel Ochiel, HJFMRI's Executive Director in Nairobi, discusses how HJFMRI is able to spot synergies, align interests and create efficiencies among research partners shooting for the same goal. 💡 Having a partner who can identify and pursue opportunities within collaborative ecosystems isn't just helpful, it's essential for success. #HJFMRI #HealthInnovation #ResearchCollaboration #ResearchPartnerships

🎉 Congrats to HJFMRI researcher Josphat Kosgei for presenting at the #IAS2025 Conference on HIV Science on his work with partner U.S. Military HIV Research Program! Dr. Kosgei presented early findings from MHRP study RV460, a Phase 1 trial to evaluate whether the U.S. Army-developed ALF adjuvant boosts immune response to HIV vaccines. Check out his work at late-breaker poster No. LB21. #IAS2025 #MHRP #EndHIV #HIVResearch Walter Reed Army Institute of Research

HJFMRI is proud to partner with the U.S. Military HIV Research Program to provide training and support for community heroes like Lucy. When people living with HIV in a remote faced challenges accessing consistent care and treatment in their remote fishing camp in southwestern Tanzania, Lucy stepped in to help bridge the gap. As Dr. Juma Liwanje, HJFMRI District Program Lead, put it: “Volunteers like Lucy help us reach those who are otherwise inaccessible. They are trusted, understand the cultural context, and deliver services in a respectful and confidential manner,” he says. “This approach has significantly improved adherence, retention, and viral suppression, especially in fishing communities.”
In a remote fishing camp in southwestern Tanzania, consistent access to lifesaving HIV care and treatment was a challenge — until community volunteer Lucy Chitto stepped up. Diagnosed with HIV more than 20 years, ago, Lucy turned her personal journey into a mission to help others. With support from MHRP at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and #PEPFAR, and in partnership with the Tanzanian Ministry of Health and other local organizations, she now discreetly collects and delivers antiretroviral medications (ART) to more than 40 people living with HIV in her community. Her work is more than a convenience, it's a lifeline and a powerful model for covering the last mile to ensure HIV treatment for all. 🌍 This week, HJFMRI is in Kigali, Rwanda, for the 12th EDCTP Forum, and we're proud to be part of the global conversation about advancing health through research partnerships. We're excited to learn and connect with others at the conference who share our goal: creating healthier futures through innovation and collaboration! Representing HJFMRI at the meeting are two of our leaders: Dr. Daniel Ochiel (Kenya 🇰🇪 ), Executive Director of Partnerships in Africa, and Dr. Abdulwasiu Bolaji Tiamiyu (Nigeria 🇳🇬 ), Director of the Abuja Clinical Research Centre. Dr. Bolaji presented his work from a collaborative Lassa vaccine development project and discussed how HJFMRI is helping to build clinical research capacity in Nigeria, a country that continues to face recurring Lassa fever outbreaks. With decades of expertise in clinical research support, vaccine R&D, and infectious disease surveillance, HJFMRI's network of regional laboratories and partners across Sub-Saharan Africa can help drive your research forward. #EDCTP2025 #GlobalHealth #ClinicalResearch #VaccineResearch #Lassa #ResearchPartnerships #HJFMRI #AfricaResearch The Henry M. The Uhuru Positive Deviance Hearth (PD Hearth) is a 12-day community-based behavior change program aimed at rehabilitating underweight and moderately malnourished children. The goal of the program is for children to gain weight and to provide caregivers education on how to nourish them with diverse, local foods and well-rounded meals to better their health without badly straining family budgets. “At first, they thought this process was hard, but they have learned how to prepare healthy meals for their children. They have further taken the knowledge home and are educating their neighbors and community,” said Sharon, a Community Health Assistant. She explained that while poverty is a contributor to malnutrition, lack of knowledge on nutrition and food preparation is a bigger issue. Caregivers receive support throughout the program from the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) International Association of National Public Health Institute (IANPHI) program in collaboration with HJFMRI Kenya, Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and the Siaya County Department of Health.
