Where breakthrough science meets inspired design, this office is designed to support every kind of workday. Anticipating rapid growth by 2026, this Biotech Company partnered with HOK to design a 350,000 sq. ft. scalable workplace and lab environment. HOK’s design transformed the building’s core, which physically separated lab and office zones, into a catalyst for connection. By introducing “casual collision” zones, the team stitched the environment back together in a way that invites connection. Materials, lighting and spatial transitions were used intentionally, creating subtle signals for people to gather, collaborate and recharge. These thoughtful moments help foster a culture of wellness, transparency and innovation: one encounter at a time. Spanning two buildings and seven floors, the project blends high-performance lab infrastructure with a workplace environment that supports a range of work modes. A closed-loop waste system safely handles chemical byproducts while thoughtful zoning supports neurodiversity, offering both high-energy collaboration areas and quiet, focused spaces. Local context grounds the experience. A shared visual language, warm wood, calming tones, natural light and biophilia, fosters wellness and unity. Street-facing labs and public connections reflect the company’s commitment to transparency, accessibility and public trust, dissolving boundaries between science and society to shape a culture of empathy, equity and shared purpose. 📸 Eric Laignel

Around the world, cities are reimagining what a sports venue can be: evolving from isolated “spaceships” surrounded by parking lots into vibrant, mixed-use districts that fuel year-round economic and community activity. For Urban Land Magazine, HOK's Peter David Cavaluzzi, FAIA and Peter Broeder, AIA dive into this new approach: 💡 From Game Day to Every Day Modern sports-anchored developments are designed to be active 24/7. Projects like Columbus’s Nationwide Arena District and the Jacksonville Jaguars Stadium of the Future show how strategic investment in civic infrastructure, from green space to housing, can transform underused areas into thriving urban neighborhoods. 🌿 Blurring the Lines Between Venue and City The next generation of districts integrates public parks, wellness loops, plazas and social spaces that connect the community to the stadium beyond events. These developments, like Energizer Park in St. Louis and Roig Arena in Valencia, invite people to gather, play and linger long after the final whistle. 🏙️ Hospitality, Innovation and Identity Tomorrow’s districts will be extensions of a city’s character: combining sports, hospitality, innovation and wellness into cohesive, technology-enabled environments. Universities are also joining the movement, using mixed-use development to link athletics with academics and innovation. 🔗 Read the full article, http://bit.ly/43886wR

As the UK accelerates its leadership in quantum computing, the next challenge is architectural. Quantum systems demand extraordinary environmental stability and adaptability, conditions so precise they’re redefining how we design science and technology buildings. In a recent piece for Green Street News, HOK's Brian Connolly, regional leader of Science and Technology, explores how these spaces are evolving to meet the extreme requirements of quantum research while supporting collaboration and human well-being. At the University of Glasgow’s Advanced Research Centre, HOK's design integrates smaller quantum systems into interdisciplinary environments: combining quantum hardware, computational areas, wet labs and shared spaces that foster connection and innovation. As technology evolves faster than architecture, tomorrow’s research spaces must be hyper-adaptable, supporting unknown equipment and interdisciplinary collaboration. These labs are no longer isolated science boxes, they’re human-centered environments that connect researchers, engineers and computational scientists in flexible, resilient spaces. 🔗 Read the full article, https://bit.ly/3J5ABV9 📸 Keith Hunter

Would you consider an airport a destination unto itself? 🛬 LaGuardia Airport's Terminal B recently landed on Architizer Editor's Guide to New York City: 20 Must-See Buildings and Designs. The HOK-designed terminal is spotlighted for its light-filled design and monumental pedestrian bridges. The interior celebrates New York City’s vibrancy, material sensibility and cultural diversity. Incoming and outgoing passengers share soaring, airy, grand-scaled sequences punctuated by 60-foot-high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows. Terminal B’s indoor green space is modeled after New York City’s urban pocket parks and includes lush landscaping and sculptural benches. Concourses feature ample seating with charging stations across all 35 gates, spacious and modern restrooms with floors that literally sparkle, and nursing rooms for mothers and infants. The terminal also showcases custom public art installations curated by the Public Art Fund in partnership with LaGuardia Gateway Partners. 📸 Jeff Goldberg/Esto Photo and Sarah Sze

The renovation of Boston Consulting Group’s (BCG) Calgary office reflects a sophisticated evolution of the modern consulting workplace. Building on HOK’s longstanding relationship with BCG, including work in Toronto, Montreal and Houston, the Calgary project reimagines the office to support the firm’s hybrid work model while reinforcing its culture of professionalism and collaboration. HOK led a strategic, three-phase construction approach that allowed the office to continue operations while transforming it into a future-ready, high-performance workplace. Flexibility and adaptability guided the design. The refreshed layout introduces a range of work settings, including bookable offices, touchdown desks, collaborative zones and an innovative “case team room” concept. The case team rooms feature custom sit-stand tables with integrated retractable monitors, supporting both focus work and agile collaboration. A multi-use space serves as a central hub for town halls, social events and informal meetings, encouraging connection, inclusivity and movement throughout the workplace. The sustainable project reused substantial portions of the existing infrastructure, finishes and systems to reduce construction waste. Materials were selected for durability, low VOC emissions and environmental performance. Efficient lighting and smart HVAC zoning contribute to long-term energy savings and lower carbon emissions. BCG’s refreshed Calgary office embodies the firm’s identity while setting a new standard for flexible, inclusive and resilient workplace design. 📸 Eymeric Widling

We ❤️ KC. Kansas City is booming and HOK is proud to be playing a major role in the city’s growth. Here are 3 big KC projects we’re excited to be part of: 1️⃣- West Bottoms Redevelopment: Building construction began this month on SomeraRoad Inc.'s $527-million redevelopment of the Historic West Bottoms Association District. HOK is serving as master architect for the 29-acre project that is renovating historic buildings and adding new construction and public spaces to create a vibrant mixed-use district just west of downtown. 2️⃣- Barney Allis Plaza: HOK is partnering with Kansas City to transform a civic landmark in the heart of downtown into a new open and active destination. The project—now under construction—replaces Barney Allis Plaza’s deteriorating parking garage with a new subterranean carpark and creates a lively, street-level gathering space for downtown Kansas City residents, workers and visitors. 3️⃣- Kansas City Current Riverside Stadium and Performance Center: HOK is teaming with the KC Current, developer Palmer Square Capital Management LLC and general contractor Monarch Build to create the best training facility in the NWSL—and perhaps all of women’s sports. The project includes a new 2,000-seat practice stadium, a high-performance training center and new turf pitches at the club’s training facility in Riverside north of downtown KC.
