In this interview, Prof. PhD. Andrew J. Hoffman of the University of Michigan - Stephen M. Ross School of Business argues that it’s time to rethink what and how we teach future leaders. HSG is now a member of ENGAGE.EU and participates in international education programme for #SustainabilityManagement The University of St.Gallen (HSG) has been accepted as an associate partner of the European university alliance ENGAGE.EU. As a member, HSG will now be able to offer its Master's students the opportunity to participate in the international certificate programme "Global Sustainability Management". "Today's business students will become leaders in a world that faces major challenges such as climate change, social polarisation and geopolitical disruption," says President Prof. Manuel Ammann. "By joining ENGAGE.EU, HSG is taking an important step towards realising its vision of educating students to become responsible, entrepreneurial leaders who develop innovative and sustainable solutions." Thanks to its membership in ENGAGE.EU, HSG can also participate in its flagship programme, the Joint Certificate in Global Sustainability Management (GSM). "With the GSM, we enable our students to participate in a leading international joint programme that provides essential skills and experience which are in demand on the job market. Wüstenbildung und Bodendegradation bedrohen die Landwirtschaft, die biologische Vielfalt und die Lebensgrundlagen von vielen Menschen. Nach Angaben der Europäischen Kommission sind mehr als 25 Prozent der Böden in der EU einem hohen oder sehr hohen Risiko der Wüstenbildung ausgesetzt, wobei die Mittelmeerländer zu den am stärksten gefährdeten gehören. Mit dem Projekt NEMESIS reagiert die EU darauf mit der Einrichtung von fünf autonomen, aber miteinander verbundenen sogenannten «Living Labs» in Zypern, Frankreich, Italien, Nordafrika und Spanien. Ein internationales Forschungsteam unter Mitwirkung von Assistenzprofessor Stefano Ramelli vom Swiss Institute of Banking and Finance (SBF-HSG) stellte sich daher die Frage, wie die Wahl Donald Trumps und dessen Geringschätzung des Klimaschutzes die Bereitschaft der Anleger:innen beeinflusste, in grüne Fonds zu investieren. 🌍 SHSS-HSG Joins New Horizon Europe Project on Desertification 🌱 We’re proud to announce that the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS) at the University of St. Gallen (HSG) is part of Nemesis-Soil, a new €12 million Horizon Europe project dedicated to tackling desertification and restoring soil health. Running from 2025 to 2029 and coordinated by the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence at the Cyprus University of Technology, NEMESIS unites scientists, land managers, public authorities, and local communities to co-create innovative, place-based solutions. At its core are Living Labs – collaborative spaces designed for co-design and problem-solving – that advance the EU Soil Mission and promote sustainable ecosystems. 💡 SHSS-HSG’s Role Our team leads the Work Package on Co-Creation, Inclusion, and Governance Innovation, ensuring that diverse societal perspectives shape climate-smart land governance. Welchen Geldwert hat ein Menschenleben oder das Überleben einer seltenen Tierart? Immer mehr Firmen weisen ihre Umweltwirkungen in monetären Grössen aus. Damit soll Transparenz und Vergleichbarkeit geschaffen werden, argumentieren die Befürworter:innen dieses Ansatzes. Prof. Dr. Judith Stroehle vom Institut für Accounting, Controlling und Auditing der HSG hat zusammen mit weiteren Forschenden eine kritische Einschätzung dieser Methode im Journal Nature Sustainability veröffentlicht. Der Ansatz sei nicht grundsätzlich zu verteufeln. New study: Climate protection after the deluge? 🌎 Do personal experiences with the consequences of climate change lead to more support for climate policy? An international study published in Nature Climate Change with participation of HSG Assistant Prof. Dr. Jamie Gloor shows that it is not the mere experience of such events that counts, but how they are interpreted. The decisive factor is whether people attribute extreme weather events to climate change. "Just because someone has experienced extreme weather does not automatically mean that they also support political measures for climate protection," says Prof. Jamie Gloor, co-author of the study. "Although I am an economic psychologist, this finding surprised me." Gloor collaborated with 241 researchers worldwide for the study. They compiled data from 67 countries and surveyed over 71,000 people. "The study shows that it is not only the reality of extreme events that drives climate policy, but also the interpretation of this reality.
