About us
About Us IABS is a learned society devoted to research and teaching about the relationships between business, government and society. Two important characteristics by which IABS seeks to distinguish itself from other professional organizations in the business & society field are its focus on developmental, not yet fully matured work and the facilitation of contacts between emerging scholars and established thought leaders in this field. Founded in 1990, today IABS has over 300 members worldwide from over one hundred universities in more than twenty countries as well as members from various corporations and not-for-profit organizations. IABS’s Research Domain covers the various aspects of the interface between management and the social political dynamics of the surrounding society. It includes, among others, research on corporate social responsibility and performance, emerging social issues for business, business ethics, environmental affairs, and business and government relations. IABS organizes Annual Conferences, which meet in countries around the globe. The conference is intended as an assessable forum, in which new ideas can be tested, which need not necessarily be crystallized as full papers. Instead submissions are done in the form of five-page abstracts laying out an original idea or project. Papers presented at the conference are selected through a blind review process, and may be worked up as 12-page summaries published in the Conference Proceedings. IABS also sponsors Business & Society, the only peer-reviewed scholarly journal devoted entirely to research, discussion, and analysis on the relationship between business and society. IABS is guided by a Board of Directors, headed by the President. It includes the following elected positions: President, Immediate Past President, President-Elect, Conference Chair, Conference Chair-Elect, and six Representatives-at-Large. The membership elects two members of the Nominating Committee each year, who serve in addition to the President, Immediate Past President, and President-Elect. The membership also elects two members of the Best Paper Award Committee. The President appoints a Secretary, a Treasurer, and a Newsletter Editor who normally serve three-year terms. The President also appoints a Best Paper Award Committee Chair, an Audit Committee Chair, and a Membership Committee Chair annually; all three of these chairs each select two additional members for their committees. The Fellows elect a member of their number to serve as their IABS Board Representative for a three-year term. The Board contracts with a Journal Editor for Business and Society, IABS sponsored publication, for a three-year term. The Board also selects a Proceedings Editor to serve a three-year term. Elected members of the Board, the Secretary, the Treasurer, the Fellows Representative, and all three Editors (BAS, Newsletter, and Proceedings) attend Board meetings; Committee Chairs may be requested to attend as well. IABS’s articles of association are laid out in its Constitution and Bylaws. Changes to the Constitution and Bylaws are to be approved by the annual business meeting. Senior members are eligible to be elected to the IABS Fellows, which functions as a form of institutional memory and provides a structure for fostering relationships with emerging scholars.

IABS is deeply saddened to share that our valued and longstanding member, Andy Wicks, has passed away. His contributions to the field - through the thoughts he sparked, the lives he touched, and the mentoring he provided - are immense and will be fondly remembered. We will miss you, Andy.
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Darden Professor Emeritus Andy Wicks, a beloved teacher, ethicist and friend whose work challenged us to think deeply about what it means to live a good life. Through his final book, “Ultimate Questions: A Stakeholder Guide to the Business of Your Life,” Andy left us with a powerful invitation to wake up, pay attention and engage with life’s biggest questions with courage and compassion. 🌍 IABS 2025: A Conference to Remember 🌍 As we reflect on our time together in Maastricht University School of Business and Economics, one thing is clear: this year’s IABS gathering has been truly extraordinary. We asked James Weber, President of the #IABS Fellows, what made this year’s edition so special. His words capture the heart of our experience: 💬 “It’s hard to get here, but once we are, we feel incredibly welcomed, and it’s even harder to leave. With over 280 participants and the largest doctoral consortium in IABS history, it’s a great moment and place to share ideas, spark collaborations, and strengthen a community that continues to inspire year after year. The diversity this year is exceptional, with participants from 40+ countries. And to top it off, Maastricht is the perfect host: a quaint and charming city, new to many of us, filled with friendly faces, excellent food, and a warm embrace that made us feel right at home. From historic walking tours to the unforgettable banquet, every moment reminded us that this is more than a conference...it’s a family reunion with purpose.” To everyone who helped make IABS 2025 such a success: thank you. And to those already dreaming of the next edition,...we’ll see you there. Until then, let’s keep redesigning business for the common good. IABS Association reposted this
Some weeks start and finish on a high, and this week was one of them! First we hear that our paper "Business and human rights as sensemaking: A multi-level framework for organizational translation" with Juliette Koning and Math Noortmann has been accepted for publication in Business & Society journal. Chance to announce it at IABS Association 2025 conference and have a real cheer to this labour of research, friendship and long-term collaboration in beautiful Maastricht! And then we continued with an innovative session on #Collage making and #business and #humanrights. From the organisers side, we were taken aback to see our colleagues scissors, magazines and glue in hand engaging in artful reflection on a challenge in #BHR. I leave them comment on the experience Jordi Vives Gabriel Frank de Bakker Rim Bitar Pauline Owelle Jakob Lutz Angel Morán Muñoz Fernando C. Lit Neva Bojovic and others. Thank you all for a fantastic workshop and getting involved in a not so common approach but essential methodology for BHR and management research!
