BNN Brings Safety and Sustainability of Materials to European Researchers’ Night The Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design (#SSbD) concept starts at the very earliest stages of the design process – so why not plant the seeds early with the researchers and consumers of the future? 😊 On 26 September 2025, BNN had a hands-on station at European Researchers’ Night, held as “Life is Science” at Universalmuseum Joanneum in the city center. Organized by BioNanoNet Association member acib GmbH, Life in Science was Austria’s only ERN event this year! Children were asked to reach inside the blue box and describe the materials without looking, then write their descriptions on our board. After learning the basic concepts of SSbD – thinking of safety and sustainability over the entire life cycle of a material or product – those who were interested wrote down suggestions for improving safety and sustainability of materials to decorate our tree. The kids had some interesting ideas! 🙂 First photo (c) Christian Hackenberg, Universalmuseum Joanneum. All other photos (c) BNN.

📣 Join us in shaping the Future of Advanced Materials in Europe! 🌍 From 26-28 November 2025, the advanced/innovative materials (#AdMa) community will gather in Portugal for a series of workshops relating to the AdMa ecosystem in Europe and its future. The first workshop, FAME: Future of Advanced Materials in Europe, is focussing on - Overcoming Barriers Faced in the Uptake and Deployment of Advanced Materials, as well as - Investments in Advanced Materials and Scaling-Up Production of Advanced Materials. FAME outcomes will be used in the European Commission’s planning for its Advanced Materials Act being introduced in 2026. The second workshop, FAME-EcoSys: Future of the European Advanced Materials Ecosystem, will allow participants to take a deep dive into the AdMa ecosystem, using lessons from AdMa on the #Iberian peninsula. Moreover, it focusses on - AdMa funding – cross-fertilisation across borders by policies towards smart funding, and - Enabling progress by concentrated efforts towards AdMa uptake. FAME-Ecosys outcomes will help to position AdMas’ R,D & I in the overall European landscape and will feed further co-creation of national/regional initiatives of the InnoMatSyn-project. The event is co-organized by European Commission’s Technology Council for Advanced Materials’ Subgroup on Uptake and Deployment, IAM-I and the EU-funded project InnoMatSyn. We are grateful for the Universidade de Aveiro as well as the Portuguese ANI for supporting the event locally! All stakeholders of the European AdMa ecosystem, from science to industry to policymakers and funding bodies, are invited to attend. Your input is vital in shaping the future of advanced materials in Europe. Please register for all sessions you are interested in attending (free of charge): Due to limited capacity, we will follow the “First come, first served” principle. Register before November 7th here ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/egqAFcbh

Connect with InnoMatSyn and Nikolaj Zangenberg at the FEMS - Federation of European Materials Societies EUROMAT conference this week!
Exited to join the European materials communities assembled these days in Granada for the bi-annual FEMS - Federation of European Materials Societies EUROMAT conference. Participants are sharing their latest developments within, e.g.: 🔋Graphene synthesis to create next generation batteries 🏋️♀️Nanoengineering high-strength steels for lightweigthing metal structures ⚡️Understanding hydrogen effect on materials for our future energy systems. Indeed, advanced innovative materials (AdMa) are recognized as a key element for shaping the future EU resilience and competitiveness. These materials are essential for the implementation of the green and digital transitions. However, it is also clear that the European AdMa landscape is a fragmented jungle of skills, projects, initiatives and infrastructures leading to inefficient funding streams and innovation gaps between funding bodies, science, research & development, SMEs and industry. I am here representing the new European InnoMatSyn project, which aims to accelerate the development and scale up of AdMa materials by empowering the materials innovation ecosystem. At Teknologisk Institut , we are in charge of developing an AI-driven materials innovation knowledge tool capable of connecting AdMa activities and project across databases at EU, National and regional levels, and identifying gaps and needs in the sector. Register as stakeholder and be first to hear the news! https://lnkd.in/dJC3SmQU

Our coordinator Andreas Falk is in Brussels for #RiDaysEU, where a clear message came from President Ursula von der Leyen in her opening speech, citing the 3 main assets of Europe: 💡 Talent 💰 Funding 🏭 Scaling-up With that in mind, we were excited to hear Commissioner Ekaterina Zaharieva stating that the EC is doubling money invested in FP10 for Research and Innovation funding. This will have a huge impact in enabling research and development for advanced/innovative materials in Europe! #AdMa #IAM
