We are an independent organisation established in 1981 to support the international exchange of journalists.
About us
The International Journalists' Programmes (IJP) is a non-profit and economically as well as politically independent organisation for the promotion of young journalists. It was established in 1981. IJP is an association, registered in Germany at the local court in Koenigstein near Frankfurt/Main under reg. no. 8 VR 646. Through its scholarship programmes, IJP supports journalists in two ways: Firstly, by setting the stage for new career opportunities and thus contributing to a more differentiated reporting of foreign affairs; and secondly, by promoting professional and personal ties between journalists. With more than 3,000 journalists from all over the world, IJP builds one of the largest international networks of media professionals, including many leading figures of the media landscape. The exchange of ideas between these alumni and participants of recent programmes is an important aim of the IJP alumni activities.

🤝Building a Network for Truthful Climate Reporting Across Europe 🎥 What does it take to strengthen climate journalism — and keep climate action high on the media agenda? Through EUKI project 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽, journalists from Germany and Eastern Europe spent several weeks reporting abroad — learning how climate and energy policies play out in different contexts, and how local stories can inspire international understanding. 🌍 Since 2018, more than 70 fellows have taken part, hosted by media outlets such as Denník N, Süddeutsche Zeitung and Radio-Television Slovenia. They built a lasting network of professionals committed to independent, solution-oriented, and cross-border climate reporting. 💬 As fellowship programme manager Clemens Bomsdorf (IJP) reflects, the programme’s goal was simple: to promote independent journalism and give participants the freedom to explore. Diesen Sommer habe ich mich im ZDF weiterentwickelt wie noch nie, weil ich: - viel Verantwortung bekommen habe - im Ausland meine bisher größten Projekte umgesetzt habe - sieben Wochen auf #Spanisch gearbeitet habe - allein mit Kamerateam zur Rad-WM nach #Ruanda durfte Mit dem International Journalists' Programmes war ich sieben Wochen in #Peru und habe für Latina Noticias TikTok, Insta und YouTube bespielt. Danke an das Team von Herbert Holguín Villavicencio In Peru war ich auch für NANO unterwegs und habe einen Beitrag zu Agrarexporten gemacht. Peru exportiert nach Deutschland jedes Jahr 130.000 Tonnen Obst und Gemüse – und ist bei #Heidelbeeren Weltmarktführer. Der Anbau aber findet in der Wüste statt. Dann ging es im September für den Sport zur Rad-WM nach Ruanda. Aus Kigali konnte ich viele Radsport-Story live im ZDF erzählen und die Sportstrategie des Landes verstehen. Peru und Ruanda waren für mich große Meilensteine. Ein Traum wird wahr: Ich bin jetzt Türkei-Korrespondentin ✨ 🤝 Dankt dem International Journalists' Programmes kann ich für drei Monate mit Presseakkreditierung in der Türkei arbeiten. Als freie Journalistin für verschiedene Medien. An die Mittagspausen hier hab ich mich schnell gewöhnt, die Türkei begleitet mich schon lange: Ich habe hier Erasmus gemacht, meine Masterarbeit mit Türkei-Schwerpunkt geschrieben und bin in den vergangenen Jahren durch fast alle Regionen gereist. Aus diesem Land, in dem unabhängiger Journalismus alles andere als selbstverständlich ist, endlich selbst berichten zu können, ist ein echter Meilenstein für mich. Der erste Radiobeitrag ist schon produziert, weitere Geschichten sind in Arbeit. Drei Monate sind nicht viel Zeit, also let's go 🇹🇷

This week I started a new mini professional adventure, joining the Deutsche Welle science desk as an International Journalists' Programmes fellow for the next two months. Between moving to Berlin, meeting new colleagues, and adapting to a different work environment (and a new language!) it's been a real whirlwind of new experiences but one that I'm very much enjoying so far. Last week I also had the opportunity to meet the other IJP fellows from the UK and Germany during a three-day programme of events in London. Grateful to be part of this talented group and looking forward to what lies ahead!

Last week I met my fellow fellows! 🇩🇪🇬🇧 With only a few days to go before our UK/Germany placements kick off, this year's George Weidenfeld Fellowship awardees gathered with the International Journalists' Programmes for three days of chats, tours, galleries and walks. We got to see the ARD studio and visited Bloomberg (which has a tinier model of the building inside a model of the building (and fishtanks!)). We also met with Christian Doktor, Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy, and spoke about Anglo-German relations and the challenges facing European diplomacy today. It's always a blast to hang out with other journos, but meeting this bright, brilliant, talented group was such a treat. I can't wait to see what everyone gets up to over the next few weeks - London/Hamburg/Berlin won't know what hit it. Thanks to Vassilios Theodossiou and the brilliant staff at International Journalists' Programmes for looking after us so well ⭐
