🌎 OBIS and GOOS at Living Data 2025: Connecting Marine Biodiversity Data for a Sustainable Ocean The Living Data 2025 Conference in Bogotá, brought together biodiversity experts, scientists, and data managers from across the globe to explore how open data, shared standards, and coordinated monitoring can drive effective conservation. Representing the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, the OBIS: Ocean Biodiversity Information System as co-organizer, and the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS), joined forces to highlight the importance of integrated and sustained ocean observation for advancing biodiversity knowledge and informing policy in a key session. 🔵 A Global Ocean Biodiversity Observing System Supporting Governance Framework Implementation Held on 21 October, this joint session, co-hosted with U.S. Marine Biodiversity Observation Network (MBON) and GBIF: The Global Biodiversity Information Facility, explored how combining biological, biogeochemical, and physical data can enhance global ocean observation and support frameworks such as the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the High Seas Treaty (BBNJ Agreement). Another brick in building the essential wall of global data ecosystem — linking observation networks and research communities to provide the knowledge needed for informed conservation, management, and decision-making. One of the core missions of the IOC. 🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dYubrRC7 📷 Kogia - marla Tomorug #OceanScience #OceanAction #OceanData

🌊 Why does ocean knowledge matter? The ocean connects every aspect of life on Earth, from the air we breathe to the food we eat and the climate we depend on. Yet it remains largely unmapped and under-studied. Understanding it is not a choice, but a necessity for our shared future. 🎧 In the latest episode of The Future of Sustainability podcast, the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO’s Executive Secretary, Vidar Helgesen, explores why deepening our collective ocean knowledge is essential to address climate change, biodiversity loss, and food security. The conversation highlights how stronger observation systems (satellites, buoys, and sensors that track the ocean’s pulse) are vital for accurate forecasts, resilient economies, and sustainable livelihoods. 🔵 Knowledge sharing: Only a fraction of the seafloor and marine life is known. We need stronger monitoring and shared data. 🔵 Collaboration: Global action depends on open, trusted ocean information. 🔵 Accessible science: Sustainable economies and policies start with sound ocean science. 🔵 Fill in the gaps: From nutrient pollution to overfishing, hidden threats must come to light. As Vidar Helgesen reminds us: “If the ocean is our beating blue heart, then building awareness is the first step to keeping it alive and strong.” 👉🏻 Listen to the full episode https://lnkd.in/dAqEVRr5 #OceanScience #OceanAction

🌊 How do people value, connect with, and act for the ocean? The EmpowerUs Horizon Europe project, together with the Canadian Ocean Literacy Coalition and the Ocean Literacy Research Community, has released a new series of policy briefs based on results from the Ocean & Society Survey (OSS). 🇪🇺 Conducted in six European coastal countries (Bulgaria, Cyprus, Finland, Ireland, Norway, and Spain) the survey reveals that: 74% of respondents are ready to change their lifestyles for the ocean’s health. 77% want governments to strengthen ocean protection policies. These findings strengthen the case for prioritising Ocean Literacy within the UN Ocean Decade, as a foundation for behaviour change, public engagement, and co-designed marine governance. 🔵 Supported by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, this work aims to embed science in society and empower citizens to become advocates for the ocean. The policy brief outlines 4 key recommendations for funders, researchers, and decision-makers, and calls for wider adoption of the Ocean & Society Survey, already used in 12 countries. 🔗 Explore the key findings and country insights:https://lnkd.in/d74CpwXy #OceanScience #OceanAction
