Thank you to Andre Green, Executive Director at SkillWorks Boston, for writing this timely op-ed about the journey to secure funding for vocational ESOL programs, and what needs to happen next to ensure these programs support job seekers while recognizing that the path to employment looks different for every individual. We are so honored to work alongside SkillWorks, Workforce Solutions Group MA, JEWISH ALLIANCE FOR LAW AND SOCIAL ACTION INC, Massachusetts Immigrant & Refugee Advocacy Coalition (MIRA), African Bridge Network, Inc. (ABN), English for New Bostonians, Caribbean Youth Club, and so many more as part of this coalition. While programs across the state have secured funding through initiatives like Gov. Healey's $10 Million investment in vocational ESOL, there is still work to be done to streamline these programs for immigrants and refugees looking for work. As Andre said in the article, "Our advocacy wins won’t provide full value until we create more seamless pathways that enable workers to transition from basic ESOL to vocational English through industry-specific training and employer-connected job placement." Great op-ed from JVS's own, Jeff Gentry and our partner over at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, David Estrada, JD! As they share in the article: "When high school students with disabilities apply for jobs, employers should give them a chance. Young adults with disabilities thrive in employment, especially when they can get started early in life, addressing vital hiring needs and creating greater economic opportunity for us all." 👏 👏 Click below to read!
I am so happy and proud of my colleague Jeff Gentry, JVS’s Senior Director of Disability Services, and our close partner David Estrada, JD, Program Manager for the Spaulding Rehabilitation Network, one of JVS’s top employer partners, on getting this op ed published in this week’s Boston Business Journal. As Jeff and David write, one of the single most important factors that determines whether young people with disabilities enter the workforce for long-term careers is whether they get the chance to have a paying summer job in high school. The only factor that matters more is what expectations their parents or guardians set for their future employment. I am so grateful for the strong partnership we have with Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital and their JobLab. This partnership has been transformative for so many young people; together we have placed individuals in jobs at their main Charlestown campus and their satellite facilities in Brighton and Cambridge. Congrats again to Jeff and David! Click here to read: https://lnkd.in/eZXQfsDv
