  • One of our Core Values at Linn County is recognizing valued contributions. As public-sector employees, it’s especially meaningful when residents – our customers – take time to recognize a County employee for a job well done. Today, we are recognizing Ashton for her valued contribution after a resident called just to say how wonderful Ashton was to work with on a recent project. Ashton works in the office of the Secondary Road Department. This week, a resident called us to recognize Ashton for her excellent service while helping with an entrance and E-911 permit. The resident worked with Ashton throughout the process, which involved multiple phone calls. Here’s what Jen had to say: “Every single time I have called, Ashton has been super helpful. She is just a joy to work with in helping to guide me through the (E-911 permit) process. She has gone above and beyond. I wanted you to know that she is doing such a good job and how much I appreciated her during the process.” Please join us in congratulating Ashton for her professionalism and dedication to excellent customer service! We appreciate you, Ashton!

  • Our Secondary Road Department recently earned first place in the Iowa Local Technical Assistance Program’s “Build a Better Mousetrap” competition, an annual event that celebrates innovative solutions to everyday challenges in local transportation work. Our Secondary Road Department staff designed and built an extended bridge plank socket to make timber bridge repairs safer and more efficient. The custom tool – crafted from an impact socket, long metal tubing, and a swiveling handhold – allows crews to secure bridge decking from the ground, eliminating the need to set up scaffolding in the middle of a waterway. “This innovative tool allows our crews to save time and increase safety by eliminating the need to set up scaffolding,” said Linn County Operations Superintendent Jerad Kelley. “It also allows for a quicker turnaround on bridge repair projects, which means shorter disruptions and increased bridge safety for the traveling public.” Congratulations to our talented and resourceful Secondary Road Department staff for their creativity and commitment to safety and service!

  • Our Access Center Director, Erin Foster, and Access Center Advisory Committee Chair (and city council member for the City of Marion), Gage Miskimen, held a competition over the last month to see who could raise the most money for the Cedar Rapids HOPEWalk. The wager was a pie in the face for the individual raising the least amount of money for the walk. As you can see from the photos, Erin won the wager, but the HOPEWalk was the ultimate winner receiving $2,290 from this friendly competition. The HOPEwalk is a local community walk supporting awareness and education on suicide prevention and those affected by this national health crisis. Funds collected for the walk stay 100% local and provide funding for some amazing community collaborations. Over the last four years, the HOPEWalk has funded both training opportunities for Access Center staff as well as a yearlong partnership with a yoga instructor to provide trauma informed care yoga twice a week for patients staying at the Access Center. The Access Center and many other community organizations would like to thank the CR HOPEWalk for their ongoing support.
