For patients once told there was no hope of saving a limb, a new approach is redefining what’s possible. Dr. Yana Etkin, associate chief of vascular and endovascular surgery, presented the first multicenter, post-approval analysis evaluating the real-world outcomes of transcatheter arterialization of the deep veins (TADV) for patients with “no-option” chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI). The study, conducted across multiple centers, shows that TADV is not only achieving promising results in clinical trials, but also in everyday practice—bringing new hope to patients who once had none. Guided by their family’s medical history and the hope that modern medicine provides, aunt Teresa, mother Janet, and daughter Emma, took proactive steps for their health.
After losing several family members to cancer, these three resilient women took a proactive approach for their futures. Inheriting the BRCA1 gene mutation, all three women—aunt Teresa, mother Janet and daughter Emma—had undergone double mastectomies (Janet and Emma had preventive mastectomies, Teresa had breast and ovarian cancer) and received breast reconstructive surgery from Mark Smith, MD, at Northwell Health's Friedman Center for Breast and Lymphatic Surgery. Their journey showcases the significant advancements in cancer care, from a time of limited options to today's era of proactive genetic testing, preventive surgeries and advanced reconstructive techniques. It's a powerful reminder of the importance of knowing your family history and the hope that modern medicine offers. 🔗 https://cbsn.ws/3IXw5YZ

For some patients, breast cancer surgery and reconstruction can happen in a single, coordinated procedure. In an oncoplastic reduction, the surgical oncologist carefully removes the cancer while the plastic surgeon reshapes and reconstructs the breast at the same time. This approach combines the principles of oncologic safety with plastic surgery techniques—ensuring the cancer is fully removed while preserving the breast’s natural appearance and symmetry. By working together before and during surgery, both specialists can plan incisions, tissue removal, and reconstruction in a way that supports optimal cosmetic and functional outcomes. For patients like Carolyn, this means fewer operations, a smoother recovery, and healing that’s not just physical, but emotional, too.

Long Island Jewish Medical Center has officially unveiled its newly renovated Emergency Department (ED) waiting area. The updated space features modern seating, a redesigned reception desk, and enhanced privacy within the triage area, all designed to improve comfort and the overall patient experience. “In most cases, the ED serves as the entry point to a hospital, and our goal is to provide patients and visitors with a positive experience in a safe and caring environment from the moment they walk in,” said Chief Nursing Officer Tiffany Powell.

💗 Did you know your mammogram can do more than screen for breast cancer? Dr. Parikh explains how this simple, routine test can also detect breast arterial calcification, calcium deposits in the arteries of the breast that may indicate an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. By identifying these findings early, clinicians can encourage further evaluation and preventive care, giving women the opportunity to address heart health concerns before symptoms arise. It’s essentially two tests in one offering valuable insight into both breast and cardiovascular health and another example of how early detection and innovation in women’s health can lead to better outcomes for the future. 💡 Make an appointment here: https://bit.ly/4ozNPc5

Prioritizing mental health, both our own and that of those we care about, begins with small, meaningful steps. In recognition of World Mental Health Day, Patricia, our Patient and Family Centered Care specialist, shares practical strategies for supporting friends and family who may be struggling, as well as simple daily habits to strengthen your own well-being. 🌱💭 Start by checking in regularly with loved ones, listening without judgment, and encouraging them to seek professional support when needed. At the same time, nurture your own mental health through small daily practices, such as setting aside time for rest, maintaining social connections, and incorporating mindfulness or physical activity into your routine. Most importantly, remember that supporting others is most effective when you’re also caring for yourself. Today serves as an important reminder that mental health is just as vital as physical health and that by showing up for ourselves and one another, we can foster a stronger, more compassionate community. 💚 Learn more here: https://bit.ly/3Kxr5KU #MentalHealthDay
