Transforming education for the community, with the community, from diapers to diplomas.
About us
Founded in 1984, LAEP is a nonprofit organization that advances educational equity. Together with families, schools and the community, LAEP facilitates access to and opportunities for quality educational and wellness practices so that children thrive from diapers to diplomas. LAEP focuses on two areas that consistently demonstrate positive impact on student achievement: • Transforming schools to expand the capacity of educators, students, and community to share responsibility for producing college and career ready graduates and sustainable change. • Reaching children in early childhood to promote their healthy development and build parents’ capacity to prepare their children for success in school. We believe six core elements must be present for schools to be successful: -High-Quality Instruction -Teacher Leadership & Collaboration -College and Career Readiness -Parents as Partners -Youth Empowerment -Educational Equity

This Head Start Awareness Month, our leaders took our message to the airwaves! Los Angeles Education Partnership (LAEP) recently had the privilege of taking our vital message to the airwaves on 102.3FM Radio-Free #KJLH. Our CEO, Dawn A. Kurtz, Ph.D., and Interim Director of Early Education and Family Engagement, Meyli Martinez joined Director of Marketing and Communications, LaCora Stephens for a powerful discussion on the Future of Early Head Start. We discussed how LAEP's no-cost EHS programs—from Prenatal to Home-Based care—create the critical safety nets families need to thrive. And, how we are currently enrolling for our Center-based EHS program! Visit LAEP.org/ehs to apply. This is educational equity in action! 📢 October is Head Start Awareness Month: Why LAEP is Committed to Early Head Start’s Future! This month, LAEP is joining the national conversation to underscore the critical, life-changing impact of Head Start—especially our Early Head Start (EHS) program for expectant parents, infants, and toddlers. The research is clear: EHS is not just childcare. It's an investment that provides comprehensive, no-cost wraparound services—from food assistance and developmental screenings to parenting support—that are vital for stabilizing vulnerable families and boosting local economies. Every $1 invested yields an estimated $7 in returns! Why the fight matters: Despite decades of proven success, Head Start faces serious threats. These attacks ignore the reality that programs like LAEP EHS are structured locally to meet unique community needs and are the only high-quality option for many families. LAEP’s Commitment: We are dedicated to delivering this proven model that sets children on a path to success and provides parents with the stability they need to work and thrive. Join us this month as we share stories and facts that debunk the myths and demonstrate the power of investing in our youngest Angelenos. The future starts with EHS. Please share our enrollment flyer with your network to those who might be interested in Center-based Early Head Start! The news of the federal government shutdown creates uncertainty for many communities. Today, Los Angeles Education Partnership is proud to have our own Liza Xet Smith, EdD speaking with Telemundo 52 to discuss this critical issue. Liza will explain that while the immediate effects may not include a loss of service, the shutdown could significantly impact communities and essential programs later on—particularly concerning payment delays and the security of future funding for vital services. Tune in for their 5pm/6pm broadcast to understand the potential effects on Los Angeles.
