Our On Nigeria Big Bet aimed to bolster momentum around Nigerian-led efforts to reduce corruption. In collaboration with local stakeholders, we sought to strengthen the criminal justice system, encourage civic engagement, and support investigative and data-driven reporting. Akintunde Babatunde, program director at the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development, shares how On Nigeria enabled investigative journalism in the region to be, "stronger, more resilient, and better equipped to serve democracy." MacArthur Foundation supports creative people, effective institutions, and influential networks building a more just, verdant, and peaceful world. ⚖🌿☮🌎 MacArthur is placing a few big bets that truly significant progress is possible on some of the world’s most pressing social challenges, including over-incarceration, global climate change, nuclear risk, and significantly increasing financial capital for the social sector. We are proud to join several of our philanthropic peers in launching #HumanityAI, a broad coalition uniting to shape a future for AI where people come first. We know AI will have far-reaching impacts, affecting every community our sector supports and every issue we’re working to address. As leaders and institutions committed to serving the public good and working to meet the needs of humanity, we are meeting this moment with the urgency required to ensure people have a stake in the future of this technology. “Every day, people learn more about the ways AI is impacting their lives, and it can often feel like this technology is happening to us rather than with us and for us,” says our President, John Palfrey. Now is the moment to put people at the center of AI.
