About us
Major League Hacking (MLH) is a 500k+ global member community empowering the next generation of developers to learn through hackathons and the Open Source MLH Fellowship. MLH partners with software engineering, human capital management, Open Source, and DevRel leaders who wish to support the developers of tomorrow. Is that you? Start a conversation and learn more at https://sponsor.mlh.io/ The MLH Open Source Fellowship is a remote 12-week, stipended internship alternative. Diverse and highly-deserving early-career software engineers pair with companies doing their part to sustain Open Source software, including Meta, GitHub, AWS, G-Research, Mathworks, Memorial Sloan Kettering, and more. The independent jurists of the DevRel Awards recognized the MLH Fellowship with the distinction for "Best Developer Education Initiative." Fellow alumni have had their contributions merged into noteworthy Open Source projects and have gone on to work for the most well-regarded software companies. Learn more: https://fellowship.mlh.io/partners In addition to the MLH Fellowship, MLH powers over 200 weekend-long invention competitions as the official student hackathon league every year. These inspire innovation, cultivate communities, and teach computer science skills to more than 500,000 worldwide. Want to participate? Start here: https://mlh.io/event-membership B Corp MLH has been a community-first, mission-driven organization from the beginning. We measure our success by the number of hackers we empower, and we want to keep it that way. That's why we made it official and became a Certified B Corporation in 2016. B Corps are for-profit enterprises legally required to consider the impact of their decisions on their community, not just their shareholders. Check this out! 👏👏👏
Tech Fellow & Peer Mentor @ CodePath | Computer Science @ OCC | Previous Software Engineering Fellow, Resident @ Headstarter
Last weekend, I participated in Major League Hacking’s Open Source Hackfest. We were challenged to build something that supports the open source community, and after some polishing, it’s ready to share. Introducing OpenSafe, an analysis tool that helps protect open source contributors by identifying malicious code before they clone or contribute to a repository. The idea came from a comment in the MLH Discord, warning #Hacktoberfest participants about the risks of cloning random projects. That made me think: as a beginner developer and first-time contributor, how can you tell if a repository is safe to contribute to? OpenSafe scans GitHub repositories using AI-powered threat detection to identify malicious code patterns and backdoors, dangerous dependencies that could compromise your system, data exfiltration attempts, and other harmful scripts. Each repository receives a clear safety rating (safe, caution, or unsafe) along with a detailed threat report explaining exactly what was found. Built with Next.js, TypeScript, Google Gemini, Snowflake, Auth0, and the GitHub API, OpenSafe is designed to make contributing to open source safer for everyone. You can try out OpenSafe here: https://www.opensafe.app/ or check out the demo below. Over the next few weeks, I'll be preparing this project to begin accepting open source contributions. #CSstudent #OpenSource #OSS #AI #SWE #MLH #OpenSourceCommunity #DeveloperTools

Major League Hacking reposted this
This morning The Information published a must-read analysis (by Erin Woo) on where the major AI Players are placing their bets, including a first look at the Google Cloud partnership with Major League Hacking. MLH and Google Cloud are working together to empower this next generation of AI-native software creators with hands-on, direct access to Gemini. For anyone who has watched the student developer ecosystem for a while, this makes complete sense. MLH is the essential, scaled, and authentic path to reaching the developer audience, globally. MLH is in 93 countries with 4,000+ chapters reaching 1 in 3 US computer science students. Link to the story in the comments. #MLH #Gemini #GoogleCloud #TechStrategy #DeveloperEcosystem #AI

MLH and Google Cloud Partner to Build the Next Generation of AI-Native Engineers! We are thrilled to announce a strategic, multi-year partnership with Google Cloud's Gemini to immerse Google's Gemini models into the Major League Hacking (MLH) network of 4,000+ university chapters, reaching over 1 million next-gen developers globally. What this means: Direct integration of Gemini models through 250+ MLH hackathons, dedicated workshops, specialized coding challenges, and our new AI Roadshow training events. The Impact: Student developers are already logging over 24,000 impact hours building with Gemini models since the "Best Use of Gemini" hackathon category launched in March. The growth in usage is clear, hands on experience drives adoption! Together, we are committed to building a diverse and skilled technical talent pipeline. One in three computer science grads each year are members of the MLH Community. MLH's community represents unprecedented diversity in tech education, with nearly 50% identifying as non-male and two-thirds as people of color – significantly more diverse than traditional Computer Science programs. Partnering with Google Cloud, we are setting the stage for a more AI-native, diverse, and globally-connected future of software engineering. Check out the blog for more details. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/g-5J4wTK
