Advanced economy central banks have slowed down the pace of rate cuts as global inflation decelerates. The line on the chart represents the sum of quarter-over-quarter policy rate changes for seven large central banks; above zero indicates banks are overall hiking while below zero indicates overall cutting. It is likely that rates do not fully normalize until the middle of next year: aggregate inflation in advanced economies is still higher than it was in the previous decade. Central banks will likely continue making policy rate adjustments gradually just in case inflation resurges, especially given the threat of tariffs and geopolitical tensions.

Inflation: Is 3% the new 2%? Friday’s inflation data from the BLS, which was softer than consensus expectations, showed both year-over-year headline and core inflation at 3.0%. Headline inflation has been accelerating on a y/y basis and progress towards 2% core inflation has been stagnant for some time. Despite this, a cut is still expected at this week’s FOMC meeting due to concerns about the labor market and weaker than expected tariff passthrough effects. MIM expects the progress towards 2% to continue to be volatile over the next few years.
