Shyla Edwards, RN, has joined the MVHS Thoracic Surgery Group as nurse navigator. In this role, Edwards will be the primary point of contact for patients and families seen in the Thoracic Surgery office, and will provide individualized assistance to help overcome healthcare system barriers and facilitate timely access to quality healthcare from pre-diagnosis through all phases of care. Prior to this role, Edwards served as a case manager for Senior Network Health in Utica, as a registered nurse in the PACU at Rome Health in Rome, New York, as a registered nurse with Mohawk Valley Endoscopy Center in Utica and as a surgery scheduler with Surgical Associates of Utica. Edwards earned her Associate of Applied Science in Nursing from Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica. She can be reached at 315-801-8588. In October 2023, MVHS opened the Wynn Hospital – a new, state-of-the art hospital in downtown Utica. The Wynn Hospital replaces two aging community hospitals, St. Luke’s and St. Elizabeth, and is capable of handling 85-90 percent of all healthcare needs in the community. The Wynn Hospital will strengthen and grow full service cardiac offerings, support the development of a Neurosciences Institute that will include a Neurovascular Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center, will be a world class diagnostic center, including Interventional Radiology and Advanced Endoscopy and provides a Level III Trauma Center plus the ability to serve 90,000 emergency visits per year.

On Wednesday, October 15, Kathy Lenz from Cassville, New York, became the winner of the 29th annual Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) $100,000 Miracle Drawing! Proceeds from the fundraiser benefit Maternal Child Services throughout the Mohawk Valley Health System. Since the Miracle Drawing began in 1996, more than $9.8 million has been raised to benefit our CMN Program at MVHS. All of the money raised from the Miracle Drawing is used to care for local children and has enabled MVHS to do great things throughout the healthcare system every year. This year alone, funds were used to purchase: ✔️A panda warmer for use in our NICU ✔️A vein visualization system for our Pediatric Unit ✔️ A portable ultrasound machine. CMN funding is also used in other areas of MVHS. We were able to provide a number of interactive therapy tools that are used daily in our Speech, Language and Physical Therapy departments at our Faxton campus.
