Let’s retire the phrase “climate tech.” In order to scale up grids, add resilience to infrastructure, and prevent the housing market from insurance collapse, we need to retire not just the language, but the entire categorization of “climate tech”. We must dismantle the umbrella term into specific areas in need of urgent work like energy tech, waste tech, food tech, and carbon tech. For example, my team Incite.org invested in Monarch Tractor, a startup with a fleet of AI-powered electric vehicles and tech solutions that work for agricultural clients ranging from dairy farmers to municipalities to winemakers. Monarch isn’t a “climate tech” company. It’s an AI and robotics company with clear environmental benefits. Don’t get me wrong. “Climate tech” served well as an initial rallying cry. Now, we must get specific and tackle problems at scale with advanced technology operating where AI meets the physical world. There is no alternative. I make my case in Fast Company.
