Your online safety is more important than ever. Cyber attacks that expose sensitive, personal information are happening more often. According to the Identity Theft Resource Center, more than 1.7 billion data breach notices were issued in the United States in 2024, a 312% increase from 2023. October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and as cybersecurity incidents continue to rise, consumers can trust that state insurance regulators are prioritizing ways to protect them from these risks. To address these risks, the NAIC developed the Insurance Data Security Model Law (#668), which requires insurers and licensees to maintain robust information security programs, investigate cyber incidents, and notify regulators when breaches occur. The NAIC Innovation, Cybersecurity, and Technology (H) Committee and its Cybersecurity (H) Working Group continue to advance this critical work by exploring and evaluating the creation of a centralized cyber event reporting portal and developing compliance resources. You can view the model law here: https://ow.ly/AvuX50XfQIg. This Cybersecurity Awareness Month and year-round, the NAIC encourages consumers to take simple steps to protect themselves and their information online: • Use multi-factor authentication as additional security to keep unauthorized users from accessing accounts. • Update software regularly and consider setting up automatic updates. • Use strong passwords. Consider using a password generator and manager to create unique login credentials. • Click with caution. According to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), more than 90% of successful cyberattacks start with phishing emails. Additional safety measures can be found here: https://ow.ly/xGul50XfQIh. Consumers can contact their state/territory department of insurance for questions about protecting personal data shared with insurers: https://ow.ly/KWAp50XfQIf To report cybercrimes, visit the Internet Crimes Complaint Center: https://ow.ly/66Xj50XfQIi #CybersecurityAwarenessMonth #ConsumerProtection #InsuranceRegulation #Insurance

On Tuesday, with authorization for the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) expiring later that same day, members of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) met with members of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Review Council at the White House. During the meeting, NAIC members reiterated several longstanding priorities for state insurance regulators. The delegation, led by North Dakota Insurance Commissioner and NAIC President Jon Godfread, engaged with federal partners to share state insurance regulators’ unique, on-the-ground perspectives related to flood insurance, consumer protection, and disaster resilience. “It was an honor to advocate on consumers’ behalf in our nation’s capital,” said Commissioner Godfread. “As we help consumers prepare for severe weather, reduce their risk, and speed recovery, state insurance regulators are committed to expanding access to flood insurance through both the NFIP and private coverage.” Read more: https://ow.ly/8KTT50X5jmZ
