#PublicDebt can be a powerful tool for development—but only when managed transparently and in the public interest. In a recent interview on Focus Nigeria, #NDI Kenya Director Dennis Omondi discussed the importance of open and accountable debt contracting. He emphasized that these practices are essential for ensuring that citizens genuinely benefit from government borrowing. When processes lack #transparency, the risks of mismanagement and a breakdown of trust increase, ultimately undermining the purpose of public finance. Working for democracy and making democracy work
About us
The National Democratic Institute (NDI) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that believes a world rooted in freedom—where people have a say in how they’re governed and leaders are accountable to their people—fosters more stability, security and prosperity for everyone. NDI envisions a world where democracy and freedom prevail, with dignity for all. Since its founding in 1983, NDI has worked with local partners in 130 countries and territories, bringing together individuals and groups to share ideas, knowledge, experiences and expertise. Partners receive broad exposure to best practices in international democratic development that can be adapted to the needs of their own countries. NDI’s multinational approach reinforces the message that while there is no single democratic model, certain core principles are shared by all democracies. The Institute’s work upholds the principles enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It also promotes the development of institutionalized channels of communications among citizens, political institutions and elected officials, and strengthens their ability to improve the quality of life for all citizens.

🆕 Can anti-corruption campaigns change voter behavior❓ #NDI’s work in #Moldova 🇲🇩 shows that the right messages + credible law enforcement can reduce vote buying & build public trust. Research indicates that: ✅ Negative messages often deepen distrust in elections. ✅ Trusted actors, such as community leaders, play a key role in raising awareness about electoral corruption. ✅ Messages that build confidence and emphasize individual responsibility resonate more than those that blame or threaten. Ukrainian women inspire me daily with their determination and smarts. Ukraine would not be so resilient in its fight for freedom and sovereignty without the active participation of women — and when it achieves a just peace, women will be key Ukraine’s promising future. Slava ukrayinsʹkym zhinkam!
Women’s leadership is essential to Ukraine’s democratic resilience, recovery, and future. 🇺🇦 At the 9th Ukrainian Women’s Congress (#UWC) in Kyiv, leaders from government, business, civil society, and the military came together under the theme “The Courage to Be Yourself.” With the National Democratic Institute (NDI)’s continued support for women’s political participation, the Congress provided a powerful platform to advance equality & highlight women's leadership in #Ukraine. #NDI President Tamara Cofman Wittes reaffirmed NDI's support for women’s political participation in Ukraine & around the world: “Women’s leadership roles in wartime must lead to real and meaningful ways for women to participate in decision-making as political leaders.”
