About us

North East Medical Services (NEMS) is one of the largest community health centers in the United States targeting the medically underserved Asian population. Based in San Francisco, the non-profit community health center offers comprehensive health care services to a variety of patients, a majority of whom are uninsured or low-income. NEMS offers linguistically-competent and culturally-sensitive health care services in many languages and dialects, including Cantonese, Mandarin, Toishan, Vietnamese, Burmese, Korean, French, and Hindi. NEMS operates several clinics throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, spanning three counties. Our main clinic is located at 1520 Stockton Street in Chinatown/North Beach; with additional clinics in San Francisco's Portola, Visitacion Valley, Richmond, Tenderloin and Sunset districts; as well as Daly City and San Jose. NEMS employs over 700 health care and clinical support professionals and serves over 70,000 patients each year.

  • NEMS Chief Health Officer, Dr. Kenneth Tai: "Every dollar cut from preventative care today will cost taxpayers three times more tomorrow. We urge policymakers to protect and strengthen funding for Medicaid and community health centers - because cutting resources today only leads to poorer health and higher costs tomorrow." Thank you to Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, Congressman Kevin Mullin, and Congressman Jared Huffman for hosting this important press conference at NEMS and fighting for affordable, high-quality healthcare across the country.

  • NEMS was proud to host Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, Congressman Kevin Mullin, and Congressman Jared Huffman at our 1520 Stockton Clinic in San Francisco's Chinatown for a press conference on the federal government shutdown and devastating impacts of Medicaid and ACA cuts on our patients. Community health centers like NEMS are the safety net. If the net breaks, our most vulnerable members fall through. Thank you to Speaker Emerita Pelosi for being a true champion for community health centers in San Francisco and across the country.
