Carbon Recycling: Rethinking Carbon Capture — Let’s Store it Where it Belongs: In Our Soils! While the world is racing to cut carbon emissions and develop carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies, we are overlooking one of the most powerful, natural carbon sinks — our soils. Over the last century, global soil organic carbon (SOC) levels have declined by 30–60% due to unsustainable farming and land-use practices. In many countries, SOC content has dropped to around 1% or even 0.5%, compared to pre-industrial levels of 2–4%. This decline not only releases gigatons of CO₂ back into the atmosphere but also reduces soil fertility, productivity, and resilience. It’s time to shift from just “carbon emission policies” to “carbon recycling policies” — restoring carbon back into the soil through regenerative agriculture, biochar application, composting, and microalgae-based biofertilizers. Such efforts can: ✅ Improve soil health and water retention ✅ Enhance food production and food security ✅ Build climate resilience and biodiversity ✅ Support global sustainability and carbon neutrality goals Soil is not just dirt — it’s the largest living system and the largest carbon bank we have. Let’s make global policies, funding mechanisms, and action plans that promote carbon capture through soil restoration — a solution that feeds both the planet and humanity. #CarbonRecycling #SoilCarbon #Sustainability #FoodSecurity #ClimateAction #RegenerativeAgriculture #CarbonNeutrality
