📌 Former Prime Minister from Georgian Dream party Irakli Garibashvili has been charged with money laundering but not detained, while there are already more than 150 political prisoners in the country, including individuals sentenced to administrative detention for something as trivial as possessing a medical mask, and others imprisoned under the criminal code for a slap or for causing damages of less than 400 USD. 🔴 The Prosecutor’s Office has requested a bail of 1 million GEL, the surrender of his passport, and a ban on leaving the country. The announcement was made today, October 24, by Prosecutor General Giorgi Gvaramidze during a briefing at the Prosecutor’s Office. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, Garibashvili allegedly declared illicit funds as “family gifts” in his annual property declarations, using this scheme to launder illegal income. Independent media have long been reporting on this trend of “family gifts” appearing in officials’ asset declarations. #Georgia

🚨 In #Tbilisi, around 10 police officers stopped and searched two young women - simply because one of them was wearing a medical face mask. The women say they were on their way home from a K-pop concert near Liberty Square metro. One explained she wore a mask because she’s getting dental treatment - and even had to remove it to prove it. 💬 “It’s a shame that you’re stopping me for this, really?” 💬 “No, it’s not a shame. We’ll clarify and let you go. That’s our job,” - replied the officer. The women say they’re not involved in pro-European protests: 💬 “I stay away from that kind of thing,” said one of them. When asked if they knew that in recent days several citizens had been detained and even sentenced to prison for wearing face masks, one of them responded: 💬 “I never thought I’d experience this myself. I was just walking home.” #Georgia #GeorgiaProtests #RepressionInGeorgia

🔴 Journalist Keta Tsitskishvili has been sentenced to five days of administrative detention on charges of “blocking the road.” Tsitskishvili is a single mother — under administrative law, a single parent of a child under 12 should not be subjected to detention. However, the judge ruled to proceed with detention, noting that her child had turned 12 on October 3. 🚩 On October 19, 14 people were arrested in connection with the October 18 rally, allegedly for “artificially blocking the road” and/or “covering their faces.” Most of them — nine individuals — were sentenced to detention the same day. Among them was Formula TV journalist and anchor Vakho Sanaia. The Ministry of Internal Affairs announced that 13 more people had been identified and that legal proceedings were underway against them. The five people detained today are reportedly among those 13 individuals. Detentions are likely to continue as the protests do. #GeorgiaProtests #RepressionInGeorgia
