About us
The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) is the largest public housing authority in North America. NYCHA is committed to increasing opportunities for low- and moderate-income New Yorkers by providing safe, affordable housing and facilitating access to social and community services. More than 400,000 New Yorkers reside in NYCHA’s 326 public housing developments around the five boroughs, and another 235,000 receive subsidized rental assistance in private homes through the NYCHA-administered Section 8 Leased Housing Program. To fulfill its vital mission and even better serve residents while facing dramatic reductions in traditional government funding, NYCHA is developing new financing options and building innovative partnerships across the public, private, and non-profit sectors. These strategies are helping NYCHA to address many key challenges, from preserving aging housing stock through timely maintenance and modernization of developments, to increasing resident access to a multitude of community, educational and recreational programs, as well as job readiness and training initiatives.

📚 Investing in the future of Red Hook’s youngest residents starts now! Beginning January 2026, every kindergartener living in Red Hook Houses and attending NYC public schools will receive $1,000 toward their college savings. This exciting opportunity is made possible by the Red Hook Initiative, NYC Kids RISE, and dedicated community partners. “The Save for College Program has been designed to allow every part of a child’s community — from schools, to philanthropy, to local businesses, to civic organizations and places of worship — to come together to show support for their children and invest in their futures together,” said Debra-Debra-Ellen Glickstein, Founding Executive Director of NYC Kids RISE. “We all have a role to play to make sure our kids are set up for success. Thank you to the Red Hook Initiative for this pioneering investment and the incredible community of support in Red Hook Houses.” This milestone expands the citywide Save for College Program, empowering families and communities to collaborate in securing long-term success for children. Celebrate a milestone with us! 🌿🎓 New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA), The City University of New York, and the Public Housing Community Fund marked 20 years of the NYCHA-CUNY Scholarship Program, honoring a record 100 scholars at this year’s special ceremony. Since 2005, this program has awarded over $615,000 in scholarships to NYCHA residents and Section 8 recipients pursuing higher education at CUNY. "We are incredibly proud of our 20-year partnership with CUNY, which promotes higher education goals, potentially unlocking doors across all industries for NYCHA residents," said NYCHA Chief Operating Officer Eva Trimble. "This critical program, which reached 100 students this year, would not be possible without the generous funding provided by the New York City Council and the Public Housing Community Fund, whose investment enabled the program's expansion." #NYCHACUNY #NYCHAYouth #NYCHAResidents

🌿 Kudos to Green City Force Cohort 29 on their graduation! On October 7, Green City Force (GCF) honored its newest group of young sustainability champions at Medgar Evers College. Through full-time service, hands-on technical training, and community-driven projects, GCF empowers New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) and low-income housing residents (ages 18–24) with the skills to build a greener future. This cohort completed 250 hours of energy training, distributed 10,200 pounds of fresh produce, and turned over 90,500 pounds of organic waste into compost at NYCHA Eco-Hubs. Looking ahead to 2026, NYCHA will deepen its collaboration with GCF by launching two new urban farms to amplify this vital work. 🌱 Discover more in The NYCHA Journal: https://on.nyc.gov/47zwrNF #NYCHAResidents #Sustainability #NYCHAYouth
