  • The New York State Police is introducing a new tool to improve communication and help create safer, more positive interactions with people on the autism spectrum. Key points: The Autism Awareness Visor Card uses simple visual icons to support understanding during encounters. Each patrol vehicle will carry a card, and the public can download/print one from the NYSP website. The program will roll out statewide in the coming weeks. • On July 4, 2025, a few minutes before 10 p.m., New York State Troopers working the 4th of July fireworks show in the city of Albany, which had just completed, were dispatched to disturbance nearby on the 300 block of Madison Ave. As Troopers moved toward the scene, word came over the radio of a fire and a shooting. Within seconds of arriving, Troopers moved quickly to enter the burning building at 333 Madison Avenue, clearing out residents located in a basement apartment, and then searching the upper floor where the fire was burning to ensure nobody was left inside. Troopers then entered the attached brownstone next door, rescuing an elderly woman from one apartment, and working with City of Albany, NY Police Department to assist a resident with rescuing a dog from another apartment. Members also assisted the Albany Police with providing emergency medical aide to the victims of the shooting. The building searches were captured by the body-worn cameras of the Troopers who acted quickly during a chaotic scene. We want to thank our Troopers, and the members of the Albany Police and Fire Departments, who set aside their own safety on a regular basis to ensure the safety of others.

  • On Thursday, May 29, 2025, the New York State Police, joined by multiple law enforcement agencies from across the region, gathered to honor the life and legacy of Retired First Sergeant Michael E. Snell, who passed away on Tuesday, May 20, at the age of 56. First Sergeant Snell retired from the New York State Police on May 24, 2023, after more than 20 years of distinguished service. His passing is attributed to an illness stemming from his assignment in and around the World Trade Center site following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 - a lasting testament to the selfless service of all 9/11 responders. He is survived by his loving wife, Tammy Snell, and their four children: Wyatt, Ashton, Harrison, and Lawson. Rest easy, First Sergeant Snell. You served with honor, and you will never be forgotten.

  • The New York State Police will be hosting a special informative event for local students to meet and learn from forensic scientists and other professionals from the New York State Police (NYSP) Crime Laboratory System (CLS) with sessions exploring different disciplines of forensic science. Sessions are free and open to the public. The lecture content is designed for high school and college students. No pre-registration required. After each lecture session, students will have the opportunity to meet with forensic scientist mentors to answer any questions and for a more personal and in- depth look into the mentors’ own experiences. Students can apply this knowledge to their own academic and professional paths while also networking with students and faculty from other academic institutions.
