Susan Carrier is an outpatient CDI pioneer. After helping get a successful program off the ground at ChristianaCare in 2015, she shared her story as a presenter at the first and second ACDIS OP CDI Symposiums. We’re thrilled to have her deep subject matter expertise and pioneer spirit here at Norwood. Read on to learn more.   What was your background pre-Norwood? I worked for eight years at ChristianaCare, starting in inpatient CDI where I worked as a CDI specialist from 2011-2015. I was promoted to outpatient CDI manager for four years (2015-2019) before jumping into OP CDI consulting the last six years. I presented at both the first and second OP CDI Symposium, and was also in the inaugural class of CCDS-O examinees. The timing was right to come to Norwood.   What will your role at Norwood entail? As Senior Director of Operations I will be supporting statements of work for our partners. I’ll also be delivering education—updating materials and teaching boot camps, as well as project planning and management. CDI is dynamic field and very changing. You might think you have it down, and then there are new regulations from CMS or an OIG report, and you have to pivot. It keeps you on your toes!   What is one interesting fact about yourself? I love to travel. I went to Iceland last spring, and Germany this summer. We traveled all over Germany—Frankfurt, Berlin, Amsterdam, some 1800 kilometers, 20,000 steps a day over 2 weeks. I love to read—paper, not kindle, and find it nice to chill with a novel. I love walking with my mini dachshund, so he can get that energy out while I’m working. I also have 3 cats and a 34-year-old turtle! I bought it for my son. He left and the turtle stayed.

I would love to crowdsource some ideas. Norwood is looking to support a charity that is important to someone in our network. At times we get asked to speak and in lieu of a speaker payment we often give back to local communities. Next month Norwood was asked to speak at a national user group meeting to share our expertise on documentation, audits, and the industry. This morning the organization asked who we wanted to donate to and I was a bit at a loss. I love so many of the national charities but would prefer to use this opportunity to help a smaller entity that has had a personal impact on someone in my network, or their community. So, if you have a charity that you love, either drop their name in the comments or send me a message with the name of the charity. Next week I will randomly select a name and alert the individual that their charity was picked.

Important clarification issued by CMS yesterday that it is continuing to pay most claims during the shutdown, with the exception of services tied to lapsed legislative provisions. These include non-behavioral or mental health telehealth claims as well as hospital at-home care.
