NSSA seeks to ensure every student in need has access to an effective tutor who champions their learning and success. Launched to address student learning needs caused by COVID-19, NSSA conducts, coordinates and synthesizes research and translates findings into actionable best practices. Working with states, districts, schools, and tutoring organizations, the Accelerator provides research-based best practices through tools and technical assistance to accelerate the growth of high-impact tutoring opportunities for K-12 students in need.

📣 𝗧𝘄𝗼 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗩𝗶𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗧𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 📣 Today, our Stanford researchers release not one, but two studies on what really drives quality in #virtualtutoring. Virtual tutoring is often a scalable, cost-effective approach that is accessible for rural and smaller communities. It's important to build virtual tutoring programs that are high-quality. 🧩 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 𝟭: What Disrupts Virtual Tutoring? Across 26,000 sessions, 19% of instructional time was lost to tech issues, off-task behavior, and background noise—especially in 2:1 sessions. In 1:1 sessions, 65% of tutor interactions were individualized (vs. 21% per student in 2:1). Tutors also used more culturally responsive language, building stronger connection with young learners. 𝗧𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘀: Charleston County School District in South Carolina launched a High-Intensity Tutoring initiative... using Outcomes-Based Contracting! 👇 The district will partner with vetted tutoring providers using an outcome-based contracting model, which ties payment directly to student growth (see one-pager below!). This ensures that funding supports real, measurable progress in reading, math, and other core subjects. Tutoring will be delivered in small groups, both in-person and virtually, reaching students who need support the most. By focusing on results and accountability, CCSD is ensuring that every investment drives meaningful gains in student achievement. 🔔 NEW from Education Week: "The number of public schools that are providing high-dosage tutoring for students grew over the past year, a federal survey of principals recently found. So did the number of public schools that are providing on-demand, online tutoring, although it remains less popular than high-dosage options. The vast majority of schools, according to the 4,000 surveyed by the National Center for Education Statistics in June, report offering some type of tutoring (85%). And 42% of principals say their school offers high-dosage programming, which is generally defined as one-on-one or small group meetings for at least 30 minutes, three or more times a week." We know this kind of intensive, relationship-based, personalized learning helps kids thrive, and it's been exciting to see how tutoring is taking root in my adopted home state! 👩🔬 Girls perform just as well as boys in STEM in school — yet gender gaps persist later in STEM fields. A 2025 study shows that female math tutors can make a measurable difference: ✨ Girls paired with female tutors reported significantly higher STEM interest (+0.73 SD) ✨ They were more likely to pass Algebra 1 with a C- or better (+3.9 percentage points) ✨ Impacts were especially strong for in-person, school-day tutoring The takeaway? Tutoring isn’t just about academics — it’s about identity, confidence, and seeing yourself in the role.
