About us
NUANCE, Northwestern University’s Atomic and Nanoscale Characterization Experimental Center, leads the SHyNE Resource, a 10-year, $10.5M NSF facilities infrastructure program. NUANCE manages over 100 instruments and tools in support of nanoscale characterization, analysis, and fabrication for over 1000 unique users from 145 faculty groups in 35 departments across Northwestern. As the Midwest node of the NSF’s National Nanotechnology Coordinated Infrastructure (NNCI) network, Soft-Hybrid Nanotechnology Experimental (SHyNE) Resource provides operational support to 5 other open-access research facilities (IMSERC, NUCAPT, SQI, Cohen XRD, PLD) at Northwestern and the Pritzker Nanofabrication Facility (PNF) at the University of Chicago. Through these enhanced outreach efforts, NUANCE and SHyNE annually work with over 200 external researchers from regional academic, non-profit, government, and commercial/industrial organizations.

Congrats to NUANCE Center & SHyNE Resource EPIC Facility Manager, Tirzah Abbott, and her winning image!
🧪 Insight Awards 2025 Winner - Materials Science 🥳 Tirzah Abbott 🏢 Northwestern University Entry: Crystal Raspberry Congratulations to Tirzah Abbott for winning the Materials Science category of this year's Insight Awards. The entry shows a framboid found in an Early Cretaceous sediment core from the Vocontian Basin in southeast France. Framboids are microscopic, raspberry-like clusters of pyrite crystals. Captured using the Unity BEX detector, the image highlights elemental contrasts, yellow for iron and sulfur, with calcium and silicon surrounding the structure. These spherical aggregates form through rapid precipitation in low oxygen environments and are commonly found in sedimentary rocks or hydrothermal systems. 📸 Captured using Unity BEX detector 🔗 Find out more here: https://lnkd.in/e_uVCZfe #InsightAwards #MaterialsScience #OIMaterialsScience

We’re excited to share that our "Art of Science Image Contest" was featured in Nautilus! The article, “A Nano-Sized Art Gallery,” highlights how our contest bridges cutting-edge research and artistic expression, showing that scientific images can inspire wonder far beyond the lab. From vibrant nanoscale landscapes to intricate material structures, these images tell stories of discovery and creativity. As NUANCE Epic Facility Core Scientist, Nicholas Gogola shared in the piece: “When you can take what you’ve learned through your scientific analysis and turn it into an approachable piece of artwork … the science jumps off the page and turns into something that anyone — not only researchers — can enjoy and appreciate.” Voting is open through September 28 — help us celebrate the beauty of science by viewing the entries and casting your vote! https://lnkd.in/gcTRtrjg Read the full Nautilus feature here: https://lnkd.in/grBAP4s9 Vinayak Dravid Nicholas Gogola Tirzah Abbott Northwestern University Department of Chemistry McCormick School of Engineering
