AB 749 was signed into law earlier this week! Here's what this means for our state. AB 749 lays the groundwork for California to understand the statewide youth sports landscape better, who is participating, who is being left on the sidelines, and what barriers exist. This bill is a first step towards building a world where all kids have access to sport, play and movement and we can't wait for the work ahead.

We’re proud to share that AB 749, the Youth Sports for All Act, has been signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom! The Office of California Governor Gavin Newsom has taken an important step in recognizing the vital role of sports and play in the lives of young people across California—in their development, their communities, and their futures. This milestone marks just the beginning of our journey. Reaching this point was only possible through the collaboration, advocacy, and dedication of countless organizations, athletes, coaches, and supporters who championed access to youth sports and play throughout this legislative session. A special thank you to Assemblymember Tina McKinnor for your leadership in authoring AB 749 and for your passion and commitment to youth across California. We’re building the future of youth sports in Long Beach. Launched in 2022 in partnership with Nike, the Future of Youth Sport Neighborhood Initiative has provided girls with sports opportunities, coach training, and resources in Watts and Boyle Heights. We’re excited to announce that this initiative has been extended to Long Beach, with orgs Books & Buckets, Khmer Girls in Action, 5-Eleven Hoops, and Boys & Girls Club Long Beach leading the way. Long Beach has always been a city of champions, and we’re ready to add to that tradition with these incredible organizations. Special thank you to the Office of Mayor Rex Richardson for supporting this initiative in Long Beach! When we set out to make AB 749 a reality in California, we were encouraged by the success of similar legislation in Illinois led by Laureus Sport for Good Foundation USA (Laureus USA). Now, with AB 749 on Governor Newsom's desk, California is one step away from joining Illinois in passing meaningful legislation aimed at expanding access and governmental support for youth sports. I teamed up with 1984 Olympic legend and Laureus USA Board Chair Edwin Moses OLY in a Chicago Tribune op-ed to share why these efforts are a step forward for CA youth. Read the new op-ed from Olympic legend Edwin Moses OLY and Play Equity Fund President Renata Simril highlighting legislation in Illinois and California that addresses opportunities in sports and play, and why AB 749 marks a breakthrough moment for youth sports in CA. Thank you to Laureus Sport for Good Foundation USA (Laureus USA) for their leadership in legislative efforts in Illinois and for joining us in advancing play equity! #PlayEquity #SportForGood #YouthSports
“Access to youth sports shouldn’t depend on ZIP code or income — yet for far too many young people it does." This Chicago Tribune piece, co-authored by our Board Chair Edwin Moses OLY and Play Equity Fund President Renata Simril, makes the case: to remove persistent barriers in youth sports, government investment is essential. At Laureus Sport for Good USA, we believe that everyone deserves the right to play. Huge thanks to our friends at Play Equity Fund for sharing this belief and leading with purpose—working to ensure opportunities, resources, and safe spaces are available to all kids. Together, we see sport as a powerful driver for equity, health, and community strength. Let’s keep pushing for policies and funding that lift up all youth — because when every child gets a chance to play, we all win. #SportForGood #YouthSports #PlayEquity #GovernmentSupport https://lnkd.in/dCN3iTNu
