As we work toward a stronger, more resilient grid, it's important to consider system hardening in all its forms: storm hardening, physical and cyber security, wildfire hardening... and even avalanche hardening. A direct hit from an avalanche can uproot entire transmission towers, so when Chugach Electric Association needed to rebuild a remote Alaskan transmission line, avalanche failure mitigation was a priority. POWER Engineers, member of WSP, combined expert analysis and specialized designs to improve grid reliability and resiliency in this hard-to-reach mountain valley. High voltage direct current (HVDC) investments are projected to top $50 billion globally by 2030, with the U.S. representing a substantial portion of the growth. The acceleration of HVDC transmission line development stems from the need for efficient long-distance power transmission and modernization of utility infrastructure. Bonneville Power Administration’s (BPA’s) 560 kV Pacific Direct Current Intertie paved the way for a high-voltage future. POWER Engineers, member of WSP, used state-of-the-art technology to upgrade the aging converter station at the north end of the intertie with a new, two-converter terminal. The upgrade increased BPA’s capacity to deliver reliable power to growing Los Angeles-area energy markets. While power can flow in both directions, the line primarily sends excess electricity over 840 miles from the Pacific Northwest to Southern California. Digital twins leverage real-time data and advanced analytics to provide comprehensive insights into utility conditions. However, budget limitations and higher priority projects can make them tricky to implement. Luckily, these systems can be built up over time. Each step of the process can be managed as a distinct project that provides value on its own. In the latest issue of The Military Engineer, Ryan McMurtrey shares how we helped U.S. Forces Japan take the first step toward digital twin integration. Traditional transmission line design follows a linear path. But when working with extra high-voltage systems (500-765 kV), it’s time to consider a new playbook. These projects are key to meeting rising energy demand, but they require a cyclical, iterative approach where design and study phases continuously inform each other. Every element—electrical studies, hardware, structures, constructability, procurement, and more—is deeply interconnected. Forecasts show the U.S.’s aging grid infrastructure needs up to $1.4 trillion in investment between 2025 and 2030. When Seattle City Light faced increased electrical demand from growing technology companies, new hotels, and new apartment buildings, POWER Engineers, a member of WSP, designed SCL’s first new substation in 30 years. We designed the gas-insulated substation (GIS) for top-notch safety and reliability, and we focused on neighborhood feedback as well. Our design addressed community concerns about noise, sustainability, and the electromagnetic field (EMF). The GIS’s small size allowed a full acre of open, community space in an urban neighborhood. Specific transformers and other equipment kept noise at levels the community required, and maintained the facility’s EMF at pre-construction levels. The Denny Way substation will also serve rising electrical demands for over 50 years without further disruptive construction.
