As part of our Redefining Publishing initiative, we have been asking: What would it take to move beyond the APC and build a business model that truly supports open science? We have heard from libraries, funders, and institutions globally, both at a convening in March and interviews with PLOS institutional customers. Here is what we heard: ✅ We need an economic shift that broadens participation in open science ✅ Recognition must go beyond the article ✅ Costs for open science must shift away from individual researchers ✅ Models must be equitable, predictable, and transparent ✅ We must replace, rather than add to, current publishing costs Read more: https://plos.io/4quloOu

Today marks #WorldMentalHealthDay, with this year’s theme focusing on access to services – mental health in catastrophes and emergencies. We believe that supporting those who face adversity and are most vulnerable is not just important, it is essential. Across our journals, including PLOS Mental Health, we consistently work to amplify research and insights that improve wellbeing in communities affected by mass trauma. Whether support is offered during a crisis or in its aftermath, it must be shaped by the voices of those we aim to help. This often means rethinking frameworks, policies, and clinical practices to ensure they truly serve the needs of impacted communities. It was a privilege to collaborate with the African Reproducibility Network (AREN) at the recent Nairobi Convening, hosted in partnership with TCC Africa-Training Centre in Communication. Together, we explored how open science can better serve the global research community through inclusive publishing models, equitable funding approaches, and recognition of diverse research outputs. AREN’s regional perspectives helped ground these discussions in lived experience, while TCC Africa’s hosting created space for meaningful exchange and connection. As we continue developing frameworks like the knowledge stack and exploring sustainable funding models (https://lnkd.in/eBcWEdab), we remain committed to co-creating publishing systems that reflect the full diversity of research and researchers worldwide.
Shaping the Future of Open Scholarly Publishing Globally🌍 The African Reproducibility Network (AREN) is proud to have participated in the recent PLOS Nairobi Convening (September 10–11, 2025), hosted by the Public Library of Science (PLOS) and TCC Africa-Training Centre in Communication. Our representatives –Emmanuel Boakye (Founder & Executive Director),Josiline Chigwada (Southern Africa Regional Coordinator), and Zoé Aubierge Ouangré (Western Africa Regional Coordinator) – joined global leaders to reimagine scholarly publishing models that are more inclusive, equitable, and aligned with the realities of modern research. Key themes included: 🔹 Moving beyond the article to recognise diverse research outputs such as data, code, and protocols. 🔹 Addressing the inequities of article processing charges (APCs) by exploring cooperative and collective funding models. 🔹 Exploring PLOS’s proposed “knowledge stack” framework that links research outputs into a dynamic, reusable system. AREN contributed perspectives from grassroots researchers across Africa, emphasising the importance of recognising non-traditional outputs, ensuring fair and sustainable models, and adapting global frameworks to suit local contexts. This convening marks another important step in redefining publishing so that open science truly serves the global research community. 📖 Read more in our blog: Shaping the Future of Open Scholarly Publishing Globally: Insights from the PLOS Nairobi Meeting 👉 https://lnkd.in/dNhb_5mC #OpenScience #ScholarlyPublishing #Reproducibility #Africa #AREN #Equity

"The current publishing system doesn’t reflect how science is done – or how it should be assessed." Read Iain Hrynaszkiewicz’s recent article in Research Information. As part of our Redefining Publishing initiative, the article explores our recent validation work, sharing feedback from the community on how we can collaborate to better support open science and reform research assessment. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/etPa6sRy #OpenScience #ResearchAssessment #RedefiningPublishing

September marked #SuicidePreventionMonth — a time to spotlight the importance of mental health support and evidence-based care. But the need for action does not end with the calendar. LGBTQ+ youth continue to face disproportionately high mental health risks, and recent changes to crisis service funding raise urgent questions about access, equity, and public health policy. We believe that science should illuminate, not overlook, the needs of vulnerable communities. As conversations around mental health and access to care intensify, we are reflecting on how open research can support evidence-based, inclusive public health responses. We are proud to publish work that informs compassionate interventions and helps decision-makers see the full picture.
