46 years ago today, the Court of Justice of the European Union enshrined the direct effect of #EULaw in the Cassis de Dijon judgment. It established the mutual recognition principle, allowing goods legally sold in one Member State to move freely across the EU. A game-changer for the EU single market! The whole story started when the claimants, the German retail company, REWE, wanted to import the popular French liqueur 'Cassis de Dijon' to West Germany. However, German authorities informed REWE that they could not sell Cassis because it would contravene national regulation. The company appealed and the case was then referred to the Court of Justice. And the rest, they say, is history... The work we do, the colleagues we have and the connections they bring can create a virtuous circle of collaboration, knowledge-sharing and progress. Our colleague Pieterjan Montens is a good case in point.  Pieterjan has been very much involved in the Belgian legal data space: he was the architect and developer for some of the most highly regarded digital services in that domain (Belgium’s Council of State’s digital proceedings platform, their doctrinal search engine Juridict, and the publication of the Council’s Opinions on new legislation). He has also founded OpenJustice.be, a non-profit. Pieterjan elaborates: 'Thanks to a remarkably smart piece of Hungarian software, demonstrated to me by a colleague, OpenJustice can now align the sentences of two of the Belgian languages (German is not yet part of the site, but it's foreseen.). It's not 100% perfect, but the 20% of effort definitely provided 80% of value.'💪 Well done, Pieterjan! #LegalTech #LawTech #AccessToJustice

We were delighted to welcome Professor David Spiegelhalter to a staff presentation on data interpretation, the interface between analysts and policymakers, trustworthy communication and more. In the field of health Mr Spiegelhalter is renowned for communicating complex data and risks to the public and for evaluating the effectiveness of medical treatments. He explained the data problem-solving cycle and used illustrative examples to explain how crucial it is to interpret, responsibly, what the data can tell us and what it can’t tell us. Citing the experience of the UK’s statistical office ONS, he underlined that organisations, statisticians, policymakers, communicators and others should aim to demonstrate ‘trustworthiness’ over aiming to increase trust.    He spotlighted ‘trustworthy communication’ and the PROVE framework, shown to improve trust, particularly among the most sceptical. On pre-bunking, for example, he advises: ‘You say what the data does not mean. You say it first before somebody goes and misinterprets it.’   Many takeaways, food for thought and books to read!
