Quantum Village

Every week, I spotlight a member of our amazing unit and this week's spotlight is: James Keegans who is a teaching fellow in Physics here at the University of Hull. He completed his PhD here in 2021, looking at the nuclear physics of Type Ia supernovae, how they explode and their contributions to the chemical evolution of the universe. Between his PhD and starting his work as a teaching fellow with us, he was a research fellow at Keele University, helping to train new users of nucleosynthesis and stellar evolution tools as part of ChETEC-INFRA.   James is also the outreach officer for the Department, helping to coordinate our suite of activities for schools and the general public. Along with our fantastic colleagues within the Department we have reached over 3000 people in the last year, through activities like Colliderfest, the Royal Astronomical Society National Astronomy Meeting outreach day, schools and colleges work both on campus and off, our exhibits with local museums and many more. James recently completed the "Leadership for outreach and public engagement course" with The Ogden Trust, hoping to support the Department and his colleagues even further in the incredible outreach work they do.   James keeps his hand in with research as much as the busy schedule of a teaching fellow allows, and is an active member of the KM3-net collaboration, having contributed to the UK press release for the Uk's biggest science news this year: https://lnkd.in/e2jbXTxY. As well as this, James is a writer for the IReNA - International Research Network for Nuclear Astrophysics Young Researchers Organization (YRO) Blog - a blog focused on discussing the difficulties of work-life balance within academia. #HullPhysics
