An international non-profit organization working to create a better future for people and nature
About us
The Rainforest Alliance is an international non-profit organization working in more than 60 countries at the intersection of business, agriculture, and forests. We are building an alliance to create a better future for people and nature by making responsible business the new normal. By bringing diverse allies together we are making deep-rooted change on some of our most pressing social and environmental issues. Together, we amplify the voices of farmers and forest communities, improve livelihoods, protect biodiversity, and help people mitigate and adapt to climate change in bold and effective ways. Join our alliance. Our alliance is all about changing the way the world produces, sources and consumes. Every company has the power to help build a better future by sourcing commodities responsibly and adapting its business model to become more sustainable. By joining us, you are helping meet the increase in demand for responsibly made products. And when the demand is there, farmers and foresters work hard to meet it, helping drive real, meaningful impact. Everyone wins when we bring the right people together. The Rainforest Alliance has recently merged with UTZ, a Netherlands-based program and label for sustainable farming worldwide. Proud to be recognized again as one of the 13 most ambitious certification labels in the Netherlands! 🎉 Milieu Centraal—the Dutch authority on sustainable living—evaluated roughly 80 certification schemes in 11 categories, comparing them against legal standards, typical industry practices, and top sustainability criteria. For tropical products specifically, they assessed crucial factors including 🌱 Child labor prohibition 🌱 Workers' rights to unionize 🌱 Premium payments that help farmers earn a living income 🌱 Impact on biodiversity, soil quality, and water management 🌟 Based on these rigorous criteria, only 13 labels stood out for their exceptional sustainability ambitions, and the Rainforest Alliance is honored to be among them alongside Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), Biodynamic Federation Demeter International, Fairtrade International/Fairtrade International, Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), and others leading the way. 👏 Consumers are noticing too: 58% of Dutch shoppers pay attention to sustainability labels, and nearly half would look even more closely if they knew which labels are frontrunners in sustainability. This recognition reinforces our commitment to people and nature—and the importance of transparent, independently verified standards you can trust. After insecticide use dropped 82% on tea farms in our Vietnam project in only 2 years, one thing was clear: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) works. 👏 That’s why we’re taking this project to the next level—scaling it to reach more farmers, communities, and landscapes. By March 2026, the expanded project will: ✅ Include 12 Rainforest Alliance Certificate Holders (3 in tea, 3 in black pepper, and 6 in coffee) ✅ Double our farmer reach: from 5,000 to 11,000 farmers trained across 6 provinces ✅ Strengthen participation of women, youth, Indigenous peoples and local communities, and other marginalized groups ✅ Build on lessons learned to make IPM even more effective Every farmer trained is another step toward a more resilient future. 🌱 🔗 Learn more about this growing initiative in our project profile (link in comments). Special thanks to our partners Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and Global Alliance on Health and Pollution for supporting this impactful work! #RainforestAlliance #IntegratedPestManagement #IPM #SustainableFarming

Global agriculture is under growing pressure, from soil degradation and biodiversity loss to climate change and market volatility. For millions of farmers—especially the smallholders who produce over 70% of the world’s coffee—business as usual is simply not an option. The urgency is clear: Food and agriculture companies need strategies that enhance climate resilience, restore ecosystems, and ensure long-term profitability. Regenerative agriculture offers a clear path forward—and our new Regenerative Agriculture Standard provides a practical, measurable framework to help farms and companies put it into action. Now is the time to act. With the right investment and commitment, regenerative agriculture can move from ambition to reality—delivering resilience, prosperity, and sustainability for people, nature, and the global food system. Great news from Chiapas, Mexico !🇲🇽 Our project continues to develop the initiative to support coffee-producing communities to adopt more sustainable practices in Chiapas. During the first phase, we implemented sustainable agriculture practices like shade tree planting for at least 95 farming families in highly vulnerable and biodiverse ecosystems. Of these families, 220 people have individual gardens and were trained in vegetable cultivation, preparation. These practices will allow them to feed their families and regenerate soils for generations to come.🧑🧑🧒 Heading into the second phase of this initiative, coordinated efforts with local partners will strengthen: 🌿 Use of regenerative coffee farming and agroforestry 🌿 Productive crop diversification 🌿 More nutrient-rich diets for coffee farming families 🌿 Water conservation and treatment during coffee processing This is just the beginning: we're looking forward to continuing this partnership with Chiapas coffee farmers and their families in 2026! This work is made possible with funding from OXO, local coffee producer organizations, the University of Sciences and Arts of Chiapas University of Sciences and Arts of Chiapas, and ofi. #RainforestAlliance #Biodiversity #Coffee #SupplyChain

From the field comes insight from the farmers we work closely with. 💡 The Rainforest Alliance and Quizrr rolled out training for workers on grievance mechanisms as part of our project to embed worker-led approaches to #HumanRightsDueDiligence across agricultural supply chains in India and Mexico. This project was possible thanks to a grant from the ISEAL Innovations Fund, which is supported by SECO Wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung. In this video, the workers and farmers behind our morning coffee tell us what they learned about labor rights. To ensure accessibility, the training is also available in Indigenous languages such as Tzotzil and Nahuatl—ensuring more workers and farmers can benefit from learning about their human rights. #RainforestAlliance #Farm #Farmers #Quizrr #India #Mexico #Coffee

What if the fats and oils we cook with could help restore the planet? 🧈 That’s the kind of innovation fueling our new partnership with Savor, a company pioneering a way to make real, delicious cooking fats—from carbon itself—without relying on conventional agriculture. This partnership reflects a shared vision: a food system that not only nourishes people, but also helps heal Earth's ecosystems. 🌎 As Savor CEO Kathleen C. Alexander shared during our #ClimateWeekNYC event, reimagining how we produce fats and oils could unlock new opportunities for restoration and resilience: "It means protecting our remaining forests and rewilding degraded lands that won’t be needed for our food system in the future. And in our partnership with the Rainforest Alliance, it means investing in transforming the agricultural systems we still need and want, into more resilient and sustainable versions of themselves." 🌱 We’re proud to partner with innovators like Savor—showing that when science, creativity, and sustainability unite, we can transform how food production gives back to nature. 💚 📸 Photo credit: Alexa Hoyer #RainforestAlliance #Savor #ClimateWeek #PartnershipForImpact #FoodSystems #Sustainability

What’s the difference between our Sustainable Agriculture Standard and our new Regenerative Agriculture Standard? For decades, our Sustainable Agriculture Standard (SAS) has been the foundation of a globally recognized, holistic certification that covers the three pillars of sustainability: social, environmental, and economic. It already includes many regenerative practices, like agroforestry, climate-smart agriculture, and water conservation. Building on this foundation, our new Regenerative Agriculture Standard (RAS) offers a specialized pathway for those who want to focus on three nature-centered impact areas: 🌱 Soil health and fertility 🌱 Biodiversity 🌱 Climate resilience In short: RAS builds on the holistic foundation of SAS, providing a new layer of depth for those aiming to drive regenerative outcomes. 🔗 Learn more about how RAS complements our SAS here! 👉 https://bit.ly/4gh7I4p #RainforestAlliance #RegenerativeAgriculture #RegenerativeAgricultureStandard #Certification #SustainableFarming
