The renewable energy expansion in Mozambique has a missing piece: end-of-life management. At SETAC 2025 in Johannesburg, we presented comprehensive research mapping institutional gaps and proposing circular solutions for renewable energy e-waste (RE e-waste) in Mozambique. What we found: - 200,000+ solar systems installed generating future waste streams with lifespans ranging from 2 years (lead-acid batteries) to 30 years (solar panels) - No ratified regulation  the 2020 draft EEE regulation remains unapproved, leaving no formal mandate for RE e-waste management -Fragmented stakeholder landscape government, donors, private sector, and NGOs operate in silos with pilot-based, unscaled interventions - Clear pathways forward : our analysis identifies 6 strategic pillars for sustainable management: -Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) -Local recycling infrastructure -Regional collaboration & export protocols -Second-life & awareness programs -Informal sector partnerships & integration -Circular finance solutions The opportunity is significant. With the right institutional framework, Mozambique can transform RE e-waste from an environmental liability into a driver of green jobs, material recovery, and climate resilience. RenovaCycle at the 9th SETAC World Congress | Johannesburg, South Africa from 28 September to 3 October. Last week, RenovaCycle had the privilege of participating in the 9th SETAC World Congress / 12th SETAC Africa Biennial Meeting, one of the world’s most influential gatherings on environmental science and sustainability. Our poster, “Sustainable Management of E-Waste from Renewable Energy in Mozambique,” highlighted how the growing adoption of solar technologies and battery storage across Africa brings both opportunity and responsibility. Our message was clear: renewable energy e-waste, if properly managed, can become a catalyst for circular economy, green job creation, and climate resilience.
