🎣 New gear developed at Arizona State University in Jesse Senko's lab is helping fishers in North Carolina continue their way of life—by saving the lives of vulnerable sea turtles. 🗞️ Because sea turtles are protected under the Endangered Species Act, commercial fishers in these waters face restrictions if they can't collect their catch sustainably. 🟢 Enter Senko, an Assistant Professor in the ASU School of Ocean Futures and a Schmidt Marine Technology Partners grantee. He and his team found that attaching green LED lights to gillnets can reduce the accidental capture of sea turtles and other threatened species, as ASU News reports. Plus, the low-cost solution puts adoption of the gear within reach. 👓 Read the full story: https://lnkd.in/giQh4uWa

Schmidt Marine Technology Partners reposted this 2025 Coalition Summit Last week, Save The Waves Coalition gathered our project partners, ambassadors, scientific advisors, field coordinators, World Surfing Reserve managers, supporters, and friends from around the world for the 2nd-ever Coalition Summit. Held at the Dream Inn in Santa Cruz, CA, the Coalition Summit was an opportunity for our coalition to network and collaborate on ways to protect surf ecosystems. The summit was a great reminder that we do not do this work alone. Together, we can respond to challenging moments and pursue our collective vision to protect the places we love for future generations. The power of the Coalition is stronger than ever! Thank you to our supporters and sponsors!
