Our latest GCI Blog post takes a look at our new report, Fire Testing of Resilient & Sustainable Building Materials! It's a sneak peek at what's in the report and why fire protection engineers should be thinking about the topic. https://lnkd.in/gukvzb7k For all of our blog posts, please visit https://lnkd.in/eaykqEsn
SFPE Foundation
Non-profit Organizations
Enhancing the scientific understanding of fire and its interaction with the natural and built environment.
About us
The Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) established the SFPE Educational and Scientific Foundation (SFPE Foundation, or Foundation) in 1979. The SFPE Foundation is a charitable 501(c)(3) organization incorporated in the United States of America in the state of Massachusetts. Our mission is to enhance the scientific understanding of fire and its interaction with the natural and built environment. We do this by facilitating scientific and engineering research focused on fire risk, safety, mitigation, control and human response. We also facilitate the development of engineering methods to mitigate the adverse consequences of unwanted fires, and we provide educational and research opportunities for the next generation of fire protection engineers. With the support of individual, chapter, and corporate donors, as well as external partners, we provide awards, scholarships, grants, and educational programs. Some of our featured programs include: **Funding major research projects that address critical gaps in fire engineering knowledge as identified in the SFPE Research Roadmap. **Student Research Grants - twice-annual grants to global fire protection engineering/fire science students conducting research on innovative fire protection engineering topics. **Awards and Scholarships – annual awards in honor of Jack Bono, Arthur Guise, Frederick Mowrer, and Dr. Guylène Proulx to recognize unique contributions to the profession and to support the next generation of fire engineering students.

Prof Richard Walls presented “Fire Testing of Sustainable Materials” at the recent SFPE Annual Conference & Expo, in Vancouver, sharing evidence to inform safer, more resilient design. The presentation is based on a SFPE’s report, "Fire Testing of Resilient and Sustainable Building Materials". Abstract (in brief): “This report provides technical guidance on the fire testing of these materials, establishing a framework that links material properties to fire dynamics. It presents a state-of-the-art review of key material categories (biomass-based, non-combustible, and synthetic) and critically assesses the strengths and shortcomings of existing standards for fire resistance, reaction-to-fire, façades, and photovoltaic (PV) systems.” 📄 Full report: https://lnkd.in/daDibVMZ 🌐 Research & programmes: fire.sun.ac.za #FireEngineering #SustainableConstruction #BuildingSafety #FireTesting #SFPE #Research

At the airport reflecting on a very quick, very full, and very productive few days in Honolulu, Oahu and Kahului, Maui. Jennifer Hoyt, P.E. of Code Red Consultants did a fantastic job leading two deliveries of our one-day "WUI Fire Risk Assessment & Mitigation for the U.S. Fire Service" course, delivered in collaboration with the USFA, National Fire Academy, thanks to support from FEMA. Hawaii's new State Fire Marshal, Dorothy Booth, was a great host and played an integral role in bringing this training to Hawaii. We met many incredible fire, building, resilience, recovery, and emergency management professionals in our classes, and we learned more about how the fire protection engineering community can continue to help close critical knowledge and resource gaps. There's a lot of momentum here right now, and we're glad to be able to contribute where we can. I'm sincerely looking forward to ongoing and future collaboration. I also presented on the SFPE Foundation's work to the Hawaii Chapter SFPE. I had a great time meeting the chapter members (including remote joiners from Guam and Colorado!), touring the Coffman Engineers' offices, checking out their fabulous collection of fire protection memorabilia, and hearing from so many people who are genuinely excited about fire protection engineering and the work they do every day. Many thanks to Chris Pruitt, P.E. and Samuel Dannaway for being such welcoming hosts (check out the ginger lei in the photos), and for your ongoing support of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) and the SFPE Foundation. The SFPE Hawaii Chapter has donated to the Foundation every year that I've been here, and it was so nice to be able to say "thank you" in person!

We are happy to announce the Plenary Speaker Dr. Jamie McAllister (Halliwell Fire Research, USA) at the 4th International Symposium on Lithium Battery Fire Safety (ISLBFS 2025), 30 Oct - 2 Nov 2025, Hong Kong. Plenary Lecture Title: Lithium-Ion BESS Failure Events- Challenges in Characterizing Emissions and Plume Dispersion Welcome to join our event! https://lnkd.in/gY5rrH2J Dr. McAllister is the Director of Halliwell Fire Research- US. She is a licensed fire protection engineer, a toxicologist, a certified fire investigator (CFI), and a certified safety professional (CSP). She holds Bachelor and Masters degrees in Fire Protection Engineering and a PhD in Toxicology with a specialized focus in fire-related deaths and injuries and combustion toxicity. She was actively involved in the volunteer fire service for 15 years where she served as a firefighter and emergency medical technician. She has more than two decades of experience in research and investigation of fire, combustion, and toxicological incidents and has investigated hundreds of fire incidents. Her work in combustion toxicity includes characterization of lithium-ion BESS gas and particulate emissions and assessment of human and environmental impacts from failure events. Dr. McAllister is also an adjunct professor in the Fire Protection Engineering Graduate Program at the University of Maryland, College Park where she teaches graduate students about advanced life safety, combustion toxicity, and human behavior in fire.
