Saltwater flooding doesn’t stop being dangerous when the water drains. Even after the surge is gone, residual salt can continue conducting electricity — posing serious risks to buildings, vehicles, and people. 💡 Here are safety-first tips to reduce electrical fire risk after saltwater flooding: FOR HOME & BUSINESS OWNERS: Contact a licensed electrician before restoring power. They can ensure safe repowering — and in some cases, isolate unaffected circuits to support lights, refrigeration, or essential systems. FOR ELECTRONIC VEHICLE (EV) OWNERS: Reach out to your dealership or tow company before powering up or moving your EV. Residual saltwater can trigger short circuits or even fires if batteries are compromised. By taking the right steps after a storm, you help protect lives, equipment, and long-term operations. 🔗 Learn more about our safety-first approach: https://lnkd.in/gYWDzY74 #SafeWithSignal #DisasterRecovery #HurricanePreparedness #ElectricalSafety #StormSeason #CommercialRestoration

Hurricane season raises the risk of one particularly dangerous combination: saltwater and electricity. As Atlantic storms intensify, so do the risks for commercial properties, electric vehicle (EV) owners, and critical infrastructure. When Hurricane Ian hit in 2022, more than 5,000 EVs sustained battery damage — 36 caught fire. Residual sodium and chloride left behind after storm surge can conduct electricity, causing shorts, overheating, and fires. This threat isn't just for EVs — buildings with energized panels or circuits are also at risk. 💡 Here are safety-first tips to reduce the risk of electrical fire before a major storm: FOR HOME & BUSINESS OWNERS: - Shut off the main power before water enters your facility. - If evacuating, power down before leaving. - Consult with an electrical contractor for site-specific guidance. FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLE OWNERS: - Move vehicles to higher ground to prevent saltwater damage. 🔗 Learn more about our safety-first approach: https://lnkd.in/gYWDzY74 #SafeWithSignal #DisasterRecovery #HurricanePreparedness #ElectricalSafety #StormSeason #CommercialRestoration

Designing a way around hazards is always the best solution. But in disaster cleanup, hazardous substances often go hand-in-hand with the job — and sometimes, the only way around is through. That’s where personal protective equipment (PPE) plays a vital role. Whether our crews are dealing with floodwater, structural damage, mold, or debris, PPE protects against unseen dangers like hazardous materials, electrical exposure, and airborne contaminants. 🛡️ Here are just a few OSHA-approved PPE essentials for post-disaster cleanup: · HARD HATS & SAFETY GLASSES for falling objects and flying debris · HI-VIS GARMENTS to stay visible around equipment and vehicles · RUBBER GLOVES & WATERPROOF BOOTS to protect against contaminated floodwater · N95S OR RESPIRATORS for dust, mold, and harmful particles · HEARING PROTECTION & CHAPS for chainsaw work · FALL PROTECTION when working at heights Employers can’t just show up with the gear — they must show up with the knowledge, training, and EHS leadership to use it properly. 🔗 Learn more about our safety-first approach at https://lnkd.in/gYWDzY74 #SafeWithSignal #SignalRestoration #JobsiteSafety #PPE #DisasterRecovery #EHS #SafetyLeadership #CommercialRestoration

Not all jobsites have the same OSHA liability. Do you understand your responsibilities if you are the GC/Prime Contractor? Better yet, when you are one of multiple subcontractors on the jobsite? Let me give an example: Your restoration company was hired to provide water extraction and drying services for a building that is still under construction. There are unfinished stairs and interior balconies without railings on them. Who is responsible for fall protection when your employees are on those stairs or balconies? In my most recent Safety Insights Column in Restoration & Remediation, I give a brief outline of OSHA's approach to responsibilities on multi-employers jobsites. We'll build and expand on this in an upcoming Ask The Expert podcast. Until then, please check out the column here: https://lnkd.in/e3XWtEKv

Speed matters after a hurricane. But pre-emptive measures, safety, compliance, and long-term resilience are just as critical. With stronger and more unpredictable storms, commercial properties can no longer afford a reactive approach. Recovery needs to be strategic, proactive, and grounded in EHS best practices. In our latest article, you’ll learn how to: 🔺 Identify and mitigate property-specific risks 🔺 Align your emergency plan with OSHA, EPA & NFPA standards 🔺 Take pre-storm actions that reduce liability 🔺 Respond post-storm without compromising safety or compliance 🔺 Accelerate return to operations without cutting corners 🔗 Read the full article to learn how to build a safer, smarter plan for hurricane season: https://lnkd.in/gH6aJAdd #HurricanePreparedness #DisasterRecovery #EHSCompliance #BusinessContinuity #CommercialRestoration #RiskManagement #SignalRestoration #StormRecovery #EmergencyPlanning #FacilityManagement
