SPA VETS celebrated the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Navy this week. Our Horizon Lounge was filled with attendees as keynote speaker SPA President Terry Benedict (VADM, USN, retired) highlighted the achievements of the Navy and SPA’s contributions to the cause. Joining him was SPA VETS co-chair and Group Lead Jarred Johnson. As is tradition, the most senior sailor present, SPA Chief Growth Officer David Hearding, and the most junior sailor, Project Manager Nolan Smith, cut the cake together using a saber. Space Isn’t the Final Frontier—It’s the Front Line. SPA’s senior instructor on the Mission Operations Directorate Enterprise Training team, Henry Heren, recently authored “Space Isn’t a Sanctuary—It’s a Battlefield. Time to Act Like It.” for Spacepower Magazine. In his article, Heren emphasizes that the US should abandon its assumptions about space being a peaceful frontier. Instead, it should be seen as a contested warfighting-domain. Highlighting how adversaries such as China and Russia already engage in jamming, spoofing, cyberattacks, and satellite shadowing, Heren claims the US has been too passive in its response, often limited to diplomatic statements rather than credible deterrence. #WeArSPA #FOCUS

Introducing our newest Puppy Fleet class! 🐾 One of the biggest obstacles to having guide dogs or service dogs for those in need is the lack of volunteers to raise the puppies. SPA sponsors the socializing and initial training of puppies that will go on to be specially trained service dogs. We encourage staff to bring trainee pups to the office, be present during meetings, and feel at ease among us. The Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind and America's VetDogs provide expertly trained, highly skilled canines to support the visually impaired, veterans, or first responders with PTSD, or those who need rehabilitation in a veteran’s hospital. Between 14 and 18 months of age, our dogs return to headquarters in Smithtown, NY, to begin formal training with their dedicated team. Based on their temperament, the dogs may become Guide Dogs, Service Dogs, Scent Detection Dogs, or be selected for the First Choice Breeding Department.
