We are thrilled to welcome Stacie Bloom, PhD as the next President and Chief Executive Officer of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, effective January 2026! Bloom will join the Foundation from New York University, where she is currently the Chief Research Officer, Vice Provost, and Vice Chancellor for Global Research and Innovation. Bloom brings considerable expertise and leadership in research planning, strategy, and operations across disciplines. During her tenure at NYU, the university has become the fastest growing research university in the United States. “Stacie has a decades-long record of proven success working to empower scientists, unleash scientific imagination and creativity, and build environments where researchers from all disciplines can do their best work,” said Sue Tierney, Chair of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Board of Trustees and head of its Executive Search Committee. “Her deep understanding of how to help universities support great science makes her ideally suited to lead the Sloan Foundation and advance its mission.” Read more about Dr. Bloom: https://lnkd.in/eXehn7kH

In conversation with officials from Central Florida, Barry University - Dwayne O. Andreas School of Law will host the Just Energy Transitions and Place Workshop tomorrow (10/3) to present findings from a three-year collaborative research initiative on placed-based energy transitions. The initiative — funded by the Sloan Foundation and led by Nadia B. Ahmad and Elise H. — examined energy transitions across Florida, Kansas, Louisiana, and Pennsylvania. The research focused on how approaches to the energy transition can consider local conditions and community-defined priorities, including distributed energy generation and storm-resilient infrastructure. In addition to policymakers and officials, the full-day workshop will center community voices who will share their perspectives on how the energy transition intersects with the lived experiences of community members and vulnerable populations. This is such brilliant news to read! The work of Rosalind Franklin, and other brilliant #WomeninSTEM (especially those overlooked by history), is one of the reasons Tamara Krinsky and I started our science in entertainment team, Scirens. Seeing this inspiring story move from the stage to the screen (and during this challenging time for science) gives me so much joy. Thank you Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and doron weber for the work you do in supporting science in entertainment.
Pleased to share that Oscar winner Natalie Portman is set to star as pioneering scientist Rosalind Franklin in Photograph 51, helmed by The King’s Speech director Tom Hooper. Anna Ziegler, who wrote the original script for the play of the same name, is set to adapt the screenplay. The theater production of Photograph 51 was supported by Sloan as a Mainstage Production at Ensemble Studio Theater in 2010 and went on to the West End in London with Nicole Kidman as Franklin. A British chemist and x-ray crystallographer, today Rosalind Franklin is best known for her contributions to the discovery of the structure of DNA, though her work was not adequately appreciated during her lifetime. The film will follow her life and work as a scientist, a woman and a Jew as well as her rivalry with Watson and Crick, who famously shared a Nobel Prize with Franklin's lab partner Maurice Wilkins without crediting Franklin who had died at 37. https://lnkd.in/ezFq5bmu

People like theorizing about how to make shit work in cities. We had a 400 person event, in which 50 NYC agency staff pitched actual problems for which they need your help, now. If you have been posting on LinkedIn about how to make a difference, this is your chance to get in the game. There are two tracks: the research track (6 months, funded, for academics), and the Technical assistance track (3 months, for volunteers). Want to help? Agencies want to hear from you. Submit your interest to be matched with an agency by June 2nd—link below in comments. Please help spread the word! I was floored by the pitches. Here is a sample: 🚴 DOT wants to study the relationship between public realm interventions and health outcomes 🚗 TLC wants to test new approaches to ride-hail pick up and drop-off to improve safety 🗑️ DSNY wants help designing a digital ticketing system to replace their paper-based process 💰 OMB wants to study the return on investment for NYC’s heat and flood resiliency work 🍲 DSS wants to analyze the needs and experiences of food pantry and community kitchen clients 👨🎓 DYCD wants to study the cause and outcomes for repeat participants in its Summer Youth Employment Program 🔎 MOCJ wants to understand the causes of increased incidents of sexual violence—and how to respond 🦺 NYCECM wants help incorporating AI-driven transcription tools to improve record keeping and response time I was so inspired by the grit and passion of staff trying to make the nuts and bolts of the city work better every day. We had everyone from analysts to the Deputy Mayor on stage. Thanks to NYC Office of the Mayor, New York City Economic Development Corporation, and other partners—B.J. Jones, Terri Matthews, Laura Rog, Marc Heinrich, Daria Siegel—for helping us get so many agencies in the room. Thanks to Social Science Research Council for bringing the academic community together and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation for supporting the work. At this point it is apparent we will have more high quality projects than funds can support: if you are a foundation interested in getting involved, please DM me. Our goal is too support as many projects as possible. Lastly, if you want a Pitchfest in your city, reach out! Our goal is to expand to additional locations. Could not have done this w/out the Pitchfest team—S/O to them all for making the day so special! Brandon Luebbehusen, Benji Satloff, Nikhil Jain.

Being at the Native American Mining and Energy Sovereignty Symposium is a reminder of what responsible resource development should look like: rooted in collaboration, inclusive of community priorities, and shaped by long-term vision for all shareholders. As part of the PMA team, we've appreciated the opportunity to listen and learn from tribal leaders, policy experts, and fellow industry professionals speak honestly about the challenges and opportunities in building energy and mining projects helping to protect and enhance the sovereignty of tribal nations. We thank the sponsors of this important event. Colorado School of Mines, Payne Institute for Public Policy, BHP, Ivanhoe Electric, Newmont Corporation, Resolution Copper, MPLX GP LLC, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation As always, there’s still much work ahead and we look forward to helping nations looking to explore and benefit from mineral resource projects.#NAMES2025 #TribalSovereignty #MiningWithRespect #IndigenousPartnerships #TribalFutures #ResourceStewardship #PMA

Curious how to improve your scientific software's user interfaces? Join members of the STRUDEL team and the US Research Software Engineer Association UX working group for a US-RSE Education & Training Working Group event! This free tutorial will teach participants the basics of rapid usability assessments—a good way to quickly identify areas for improvement in any user experience. Whether your users interact with your software product via command line or GUI, usability assessments can be a useful tool. These tests can be completed quickly and provide quantitative data like users’ success rates, speed, or satisfaction when completing a task. In this hands-on tutorial, participants will learn to define a task for moderated assessment, recruit and prepare for their study, conduct a usability assessment, and analyze results. This event is helping pilot materials from a forthcoming The Carpentries curriculum on UX Research Methods being developed by the STRUDEL team with generous funding from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.
