About us
The Bee Conservancy, formerly The Honeybee Conservancy, is an environmental nonprofit dedicated to protecting bees, safeguarding the environment, and securing food justice through education, research, habitat creation, and advocacy. We are a project of Social and Environmental Entrepreneurs, and strive towards a day when all bee populations thrive in protected habitats, and are supported by an engaged global network. Bees lie at the heart of the world’s survival. They pollinate 1 in 3 bites of food we eat and are essential to the health and prosperity of countless ecosystems. For this reason, scientists consider them a keystone species. However, bees are in peril. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, more than half of North America’s 4,000 native bee species alone are in decline, with 1 in 4 species at risk of extinction. The Honeybee Conservancy works with top brands and organizations to create innovative programming and strategic partnerships that advance shared goals for a sustainable future. Our flagship Sponsor-a-Hive program places native bee and honeybee homes in underserved communities across the U.S. and Canada to help nurture local ecology, bolster food production in gardens and farms, and build communities. Do you have a digital camera sitting on your shelf collecting dust? Put it to work for the planet! The Bee Conservancy is calling for donations of new or gently used digital cameras and lenses to help our community scientists capture and document the pollinators that keep our food systems thriving. We can use point-and-shoot, DSLR, or mirrorless cameras made in 2018 or later with interchangeable lenses that include a battery and charger! ➡️Reach out to our Director of Development, Joey Rodriguez, at joey@thebeeconservancy.org to learn more about donating your gently used camera equipment to The Bee Conservancy. No camera to donate but still want to help? In 2024, we began a partnership with Rocking The Boat, a South Bronx non-profit empowering youth through ecologically-focused STEM learning. Together, we launched a pilot program that: - Planted edible and native beds - Developed and taught hands-on curricula covering habitat and seed collection, the role of bees in food and ecosystems, and more - Collected local pollinator population data on iNaturalist through community science initiatives - Connected with youth programs like City Growers through group learning and skill-share events - Assisted with beehive installation to support RtB’s teaching goals - Established new pollinator habitat at Hunts Point Riverside Park, which includes native perennials donated by Greenbelt Conservancy including frost aster, anise hyssop, yellow coneflower, and mountain mint. This year, we’re excited to: - Expand habitat creation at Hunts Point Riverside Park - Enhance data collection - Offer youth skill training - Host community science events … and more! Together, we’re creating a brighter future for our youth, pollinators, and the planet. Photo Credits to the TBC Team #Pollinators #HuntsPoint #bees #savethebees #beethesolution

Spotted: One mysterious sweat bee (right photo) and one very perplexing bumblebee (left photo). And no, we’re not just confused—that bee is literally called Bombus perplexus because it’s so hard to identify! We recently visited the Greenbelt Nature Center in Staten Island to support volunteers creating a native plant bed, talk about the intimate relationship between bees and plants, and to see what was buzzing about for our iNaturalist project.! We were thrilled to spot some native bee action — want to help, too? Become a community scientist by snapping pics of your local pollinators ! Find all the details you need at this link: https://lnkd.in/en3pXsdi To all our bee lovers and naturalists, leave a guess in the comments on what species of sweat bee is on the right! #inaturalist #bioblitz #greenbeltnaturecenter #wildbees #nativebees #communityscience #bumblebee #sweatbee #bombus Photo Credit: Amy Grumbling

The people have spoken! SB9, a bill to limit the use of neonicotinoid pesticides in Connecticut, passed in the state senate, and now the house. Thank you to CT Pesticide Reform and the vast coalition of advocates for your hard work in ending the use of neonics on the state’s lawns and golf courses (over 300,000 acres of grass). This will help protect bees, birds, and pollinators, and minimize harmful levels of neonics in our rivers and ecosystems. Let’s celebrate this win and continue building momentum! May 20th is World Bee Day! Spearheaded by the government of Slovenia and made official by the United Nations in 2017, this day serves to, among many bee-utiful things, “promote actions that will protect and enhance pollinators and their habitats, improve their abundance and diversity.” The Bee Conservancy has the honor of joining a special event at the United Nations today to meet with global representatives and share insights on how — together — we can protect these precious pollinators. https://lnkd.in/euE7GtVD Easy actions you can take to join the movement: - Plant a pollinator garden: https://plants.usda.gov/ - Go chemical-free for bees - Give voice to bees by making YOUR voice heard: https://lnkd.in/e9R7-Dm - Support our work: https://lnkd.in/gWwQASUh
