Across NYC public schools and colleges, too many students face the daily challenge of food insecurity—balancing academic goals while struggling to meet basic nutritional needs. Today, we're proud and grateful to report on Benny's Food Pantry's impact on our students and communities in the past academic year: - 12,000+ visits from students, faculty, and staff - 30,000+ pounds of nutritious meals distributed - 2,100 free meals provided through our partnership with The Migrant Kitchen - 600+ holiday meals delivered through our annual drive with Red Rabbit to local Harlem communities. This year, we’re also proud to relaunch Benny’s Urban Gardens in collaboration with CCNY Sustainability and the Geosciences Club—expanding our mission beyond food distribution to address the roots of food insecurity. Each day, we are reminded that no student should have to choose between nourishment and education. Our gratitude goes to our partners and donors—especially The Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation —for ensuring that every member of our campus community can thrive. 🥦✨ It’s Fresh Food Friday at Macaulay! ✨🥦 Thanks to the generosity of The Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation, our food pantry program is bringing fresh, healthy foods to our students. And on the first Friday of every month, they get something even better: a live cooking demonstration! This afternoon, our amazing Director of Counseling Services and Wellness, Dorene Ng, is showing students how to build delicious, healthy bowls 🍲 — and of course, everyone gets to cook and eat! A big shout-out to Rona Lane for giving up her desk to store supplies before the main event. Is this what you get for being the one with the clear desk? 🤣 We’re so proud to see our students learning, cooking, and sharing meals together. Here’s to fresh food, community, and wellness!

🎓 We believe that financial emergencies shouldn’t threaten a student’s ability to finish their degree. That’s where our Student Emergency Fund steps in — covering urgent needs like rent, food, childcare, and medical bills so students can stay on track to graduate. Emergency grants help ensure that momentary hardship doesn’t stand in the way of their dreams to support public health We’re proud that 100% of recipients report greater financial stability after receiving support. A huge thank you to The Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation for making this vital lifeline possible. CUNY students and employees can use any of the University’s 22 campus pantries, regardless of their campus affiliation. With continued support from The Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation, our food pantries remain open year-round and collectively serve more than 130,000 CUNY students annually. “We are proud to support the colleges’ efforts to make food easily available to students,” said Cass Conrad, Executive Director of the Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation. “CUNY students are remarkably resourceful, but as the cost of groceries continues to climb, even the most resilient students may find it difficult to keep food on the table. Our goal is to help relieve that stress so that students can continue working toward their goals.”

Today, we were proud to host the Petrie Strong First Jobs convening at the CUNY Graduate Center, bringing together nearly 20 of our nonprofit and higher education partner grantees. These dedicated organizations are working to ensure that graduating students not only secure their first jobs but begin careers that put them on a path to family-sustaining wages. Gregory J Morris, MPA of NYC Employment and Training Coalition (NYCETC) kicked off the day with a thoughtful look at the latest labor data, helping frame both the challenges and opportunities ahead. We were also fortunate to hear insights from Marcus Felder of Blackstone and Niesha Taylor of National Association of Colleges and Employers, who shared how employers are adapting to this evolving landscape. We’re grateful to our speakers for grounding the conversation and to our grantees for their continued partnership and commitment to student success.

In Inside Higher Ed, Christopher Buonocore, Alex Humphreys, Emily Tichenor and I write about an exciting milestone: the public launch of the beta version of ITHAKA's national Transfer Explorer. Transfer Explorer beta site: https://lnkd.in/eqV3MxEA Inside Higher Ed Blog post: https://lnkd.in/e9TZekep The beta site allows any user to create a personal wallet of college courses they have taken or plan to take at one or more schools, and explore how those courses transfer and apply to degree requirements at participating schools. The data on how transfer courses count toward requirements are drawn directly from schools' source systems, ensuring the information is up to date and reliable. The first three participating schools are Aiken Technical College, Coastal Carolina University, Lander University, all part of South Carolina Commission of Higher Education. Dozens of additional transfer destinations from South Carolina, Washington, Connecticut, and the City University of New York will be added in the coming months. We will also be adding new functionality, such as the ability for users to include exams, certifications, military training, and other credit for prior learning to the wallet, and different ways of exploring the data. We're very grateful for the collaboration of our system and institutional partners, our data integration specialists at DXtera Institute, and our funders Ascendium Education Group, ECMC Foundation, Gates Foundation, The Heckscher Foundation for Children, The Ichigo Foundation, and The Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation. Check out the Inside Higher Ed blog and the beta site to learn more.
