Helping Kids and Families Today For a Better Tomorrow
About us
The Child and Family Guidance Center is a child-centered, family-focused, and community-based agency that offers high-quality mental health care and behavioral supports to children under the age of 18 and their families. Our hope is for all Fairfield County children to be emotionally and psychologically healthy so that they can reach their maximum potential at home, at school, and in life. Founded in 1925, we have four sites located in Bridgeport, Norwalk, Stratford, and Fairfield. Services are available in both English and Spanish. Our mission is to promote positive child development and the emotional well-being of children as well as to empower families to provide a nurturing, caring, and safe haven for children to grow and to mature. We strive to be responsive to the mental health and behavioral needs of the community by working in collaboration with parents, providers, and others to offer services that are culturally competent, built on the strengths of the families we serve, and driven by the individual needs of our clients. No one is denied services based on their inability to pay. Many of our services are offered free of charge while some ask for a ‘fee for service’ based on a sliding scale. Additionally, some of our programs accept Medicaid, HUSKY, and several commercial insurance providers. All fees (if applicable) are at reviewed at the Intake appointment.

Mental health is shaped by history, culture, and community. For Indigenous youth, systemic barriers and historical trauma continue to affect mental health outcomes. That's why we're committed to ensuring every child and family has access to compassionate, culturally responsive mental health support, today and every day. Please note that our offices are closed in observance of #IndigenousPeoplesDay

Coming out can bring pride and connection, but it can also come with fear, isolation, or rejection. These experiences can have a real impact on mental health, especially during adolescence. We want to remind young people that support is out there. At The Child & Family Guidance Center, we provide safe spaces where all youth can be heard, cared for, and supported. #NationalComingOutDay

We’re thrilled to announce the next chapter in our journey: the appointment of Gisselle Acevedo as our incoming President & CEO. Gisselle brings more than two decades of leadership in mental health services and organizational management across the nonprofit, for-profit, and education sectors, along with a deep commitment to our mission. A licensed marriage and family therapist, Gisselle's career at CFGC began as an intern and clinician, and later served on our Board of Directors, giving her a firsthand understanding of the families and staff who make our work possible. “It’s not easy to step away from something you love, but it’s a lot easier knowing the organization is in such capable hands. Gisselle brings not only heart and expertise to this role, but also an innate understanding of what makes CFGC so special—the trust families place in us, the dedication of our staff, and the impact that compassionate care can have on a child’s life.” - michael patota, Current President and CEO. At The Child and Family Guidance Center, we are honored to work alongside new and expectant mothers through our Greater Bridgeport Home Visiting Partnership. Our goal is to provide compassionate care, reliable information, and ongoing advocacy for the health and well-being of children and families in our community. Recent media coverage has raised questions about acetaminophen use during pregnancy. We know this can feel concerning for parents. Yale child psychologist Dr. James McPartland shared an important reminder: “the bulk of scientific literature has shown no causal link between autism and acetaminophen exposure to the womb.” We remain committed to supporting families with compassion and sharing clear, evidence-based information. When mothers are supported, children and families thrive. You can read more in NBC Connecticut’s coverage here: Yale Expert Weighs in on Acetaminophen Use and Pregnancy https://lnkd.in/efvPmN-m We encourage all families to always consult with their physician for guidance.

Shana Tova from The Child & Family Guidance Center ✨🍯🍎 As we celebrate Rosh Hashanah, a season of reflection and growth, we also celebrate a new chapter for one of our own. After four years of dedicated service as OPCC Supervisor, Fred Hyman will be leaving CFGC at the end of October. Alongside his work here, Fred has faithfully served as a Rabbi in Connecticut, and now he has been called to lead a larger synagogue in another state. We are truly thrilled for Fred and this new opportunity. His calm and steady presence here will be deeply missed, but his impact will continue to resonate. As we wish Fred well in this exciting journey, we also extend to all who celebrate a heartfelt Shana Tova. May the year ahead be filled sweetness and new beginnings. ✨ #shanatova #bridgeport #fairfieldcounty
