“Throwback Thursday” - Ten years ago, in October 2015, The Tolly Group published a groundbreaking lab test commissioned by Allot Communications (now simply Allot). In this test, Allot demonstrated carrier-class L4-7 classification and URL filtering performance running their virtualized service gateway running on standard “PC” server hardware - know as “Commercial off-the-shelf” or COTS. Tests showed that that the system delivered 193.92Gpbs — effectively 200Gbps - across 24 10GbE ports paired in twos. This was significant because it proved two things: 1) COTS hardware was now powerful enough to deliver carrier-class performance, and 2) virtualized networking functions (much cheaper than dedicated hardware) used for the test showed that high-performance - carrier-class performance - was achievable. These results showed that costs could be reduced and flexibility increased by use of COTS and VNF. For prior years - for many years, in fact - specialized ASICs and other hardware accelerators were typically required to deliver carrier-class performance. Because of the custom nature of specialized hardware, products built using that technology were generally quite expensive. Allot’s breakthrough product was quite an achievement.
