  • Please join us later this month for a panel discussion and networking event where guest speakers in corrections, parole, and homelessness services will explore how their sectors can coordinate to help people overcome housing challenges when reentering society following incarceration. After being involved with the justice system, someone does not reenter society in a vacuum or in isolation. It requires the shared effort of housing providers, service organizations, correctional partners, and community members who understand the barriers returning citizens face. This event will focus on sparking this coordination and shared effort in Connecticut. This event is part of our ongoing "Opening Doors To..." event series. Designed to support staff in the homeless response system, each event focuses on the intersection of homelessness response and related issues, like employment, recovery, and immigration. 🔗 RSVP in comments 📍 Greens Farms Church 📅 Friday, October 31, 10:00am - 12:00pm

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Litchfield County Annual Housing Affordability Summit! It was an incredible opportunity to connect with local leaders, advocates, and community members committed to addressing our region’s housing needs. From engaging workshops to keynote remarks from Nandini Natarajan of the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority, State Representative Maria Horn (D-64), and Commissioner Seila Mosquera-Bruno of the Connecticut Department of Housing, the sessions highlighted both the progress made and the important work that still lies ahead. We are also deeply grateful to the Foundation for Community Health for helping to present this year’s conference—and to every participant who made this gathering such a meaningful step forward for housing opportunity in Connecticut!

  • The National Housing Law Project offers guidance on how the government shutdown impacts tenants who receive some form of rental assistance through federal programs, like Section 8 Vouchers. Federal rental assistance funds are already obligated through November, so most HUD and USDA housing programs should continue operating without disruption. This means tenants should not face rent increases, eviction notices, or voucher terminations simply because of the shutdown. However, you are still responsible for paying your share of the rent. If your landlord attempts to raise rent or issues new notices during this period, that may violate tenant protections — reach out to legal aid right away and keep copies of your lease and any written notices you receive.

Tenant organizing is a strong and growing force for housing stability in Connecticut. Like a labor union, a tenant union allows residents to unite and negotiate with their landlord for fair rent, fair leases, and better living conditions, if those things are not being provided for. Southeastern Connecticut now has its first tenant union. On Friday in East Lyme, residents of the Bay Point Apartments (fka Windward Village), most of whom are seniors, launched their new tenant union with support from the Connecticut Tenants Union and the Center for Housing Opportunity Eastern CT (Beth Sabilia and Nicole McCormack). Last summer, we helped the tenants and the town establish a Fair Rent Commission after a new landlord, Alpha Capital, purchased the apartment complex and hiked rents. (This is increasingly common in Connecticut.) The commission found at least some of Alpha’s Bay Point rent increases “excessive," demonstrating why this type of organizing is essential here.
