🎉 We had an incredible time celebrating the opening of The Kelsey Civic Center with residents, partners, and city leaders in San Francisco! From a joyful ribbon cutting to remarks from Tiffany Bohee of Mercy Housing, Micaela Connery, Daniel Lurie 丹尼爾·羅偉, and Bilal Mahmood the day highlighted the community as a blueprint for affordable, accessible, and inclusive housing. Our resident panel moderated by James Vossoughi of J.P. Morgan brought powerful stories of community, connection, and what a disability-forward future can look like in San Francisco and across the country. 💙 This isn’t just housing—it’s home. Thank you to everyone who made this day and this community possible. We joined the National Council of State Housing Agencies (NCSHA) Annual Conference in New Orleans to share how disability-forward choices can be made at every step of housing design, development and operations. State Housing Finance Agencies have so much power in transforming housing opportunities for people with disabilities, and we’re grateful to convene with them to create a more equitable housing future. Thanks for having us! #NCSHA25 . . . Image Description: Allie is a white queer person with glasses wearing a black and white striped shirt and a black mask. Currently, 70 million people with disabilities in the United States experience one or more housing barriers, including the high cost of housing, the housing shortage, discrimination, and the lack of accessible housing. Disability-forward housing offers a different future. Over 350 advocates showed up to defend the critical federal housing programs—including Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8), HUD Section 811, and HOME—that make affordable, accessible, community-based housing possible for people with disabilities. A huge thank you to our co-hosts The Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law, @nciladvocacy, New Disabled South, and Autistic Self Advocacy Network and speakers Kim Johnson, Deborah Thrope, Gregory Robinson, MPH, Jennifer Mathis, and Alía Fierro, MRP for coming together for last week’s webinar. We continue to urge all advocates to contact your members of Congress, and push back against policies that threaten housing access and inclusion for people with disabilities. Learn more about how our co-founders laid the foundation for the work we’re proud to do today. Thank you UCD Alumni for sharing our story!
"Smurfit was where I put the business plan together, and once I graduated in 2017 I was ready to launch the business full time." 💼 Micaela Connery developed the business plan for The Kelsey, a San Francisco-based not-for-profit organisation for the development of disability-forward inclusive community housing, while taking an MBA at UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School. The Kelsey has already created hundreds of homes and is now on a mission to support 20,000 more by 2030, whether by building communities directly, offering technical expertise, or driving policy change across the US.
