⚙️Clean Data, Dirty Process ⚙️ “Garbage in, garbage faster.” 🚮⚡ A client asked us to automate a set of mission dashboards. The data sources were already cleaned and curated, so it looked like a simple task. But the way that data arrived? Not so simple. 🤔 Data was passed manually between teams.There were multiple copies. Conflicting timestamps. Subtle differences in what fields meant depending on the sender. We could’ve scripted the dashboard build in a day. But that would’ve just locked in a flawed pipeline. So instead, we automated the handoffs: structured file drops, version enforcement, and timestamp integrity checks 🕒 — then we automated the dashboards. Now they get trusted dashboards… built on trusted data 🔐. Don’t confuse clean data with a clean process. No one on the current team knew how it worked. The original developer had rotated out. There were no docs. No backup plan. No test environment. Just a fragile script doing important work... silently. When it broke, it broke hard — and no one knew where to start. At Themis, we rebuilt the automation with transparency in mind. We documented every step, versioned every script, and built a testable path for future updates. Most importantly, we made sure someone owned it. Because invisible automation isn’t success. 💥𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐆𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 “Bad automation is worse than no automation.” We’ve seen automation projects fall flat — or worse, cause mission delays — because someone tried to bolt it onto a broken workflow. One program we inherited had “automated” report distribution… but the source data still came from five separate systems and had to be manually normalized in Excel. They’d automated the last step of a broken process. In government IT, automation can’t be the afterthought. It has to be part of reengineering the workflow from the ground up. We once helped a government team automate ticket routing inside a classified helpdesk environment. The real win didn’t come from speed. It came from understanding the business logic, documenting how triage decisions were made, and then building automation that reflected reality — not wishful thinking. Tickets started flowing predictably. Roles were respected. Analysts got what they needed without chasing answers. Confidence in the system went up, and the burden of oversight went down.
