Trends in Chemistry's October issue is online now: Tiny bags, big discoveries: https://hubs.li/Q03P4RMc0 Membrane proteins are vital drug targets, yet their structural characterization is often hindered by instability in conventional detergents. In their Review, Chae and colleagues present pendant-bearing detergents as next-generation tools to address this challenge. Pendant chains positioned at the hydrophilic-hydrophobic interface enhance protein stabilization in multiple ways, including filling micelle voids, mediating transitions from bola- to facial amphiphiles, inverting pendant orientation, and tuning detergent architecture in the presence of membrane proteins. By combining stability with versatility, these innovative detergents open new opportunities for high-resolution structural biology of membrane proteins. Happy to share our latest review in Trends in Chemistry: We highlight the biosynthesis of unusual and highly modified amino acids in complex peptide natural products. We compare different biosynthetic routes in the different pathway types (ribosomal vs. nonribosomal) and especially focus on recently discovered pathway interconnections. Great work by talented PhD student Lukas Zimmer!
